Fabulous and extremely rare GLEN CAMPBELL 45 (Capitol 5441) "Guess I'm Dumb," which was written by Brian Wilson (with Russ Titelman) and arranged and produced by Brian. This was not even a minor hit, which is why it's very rare; but, most importantly, it is extremely sought after because many (myself included) believe it to be the first seed that launched Brian's PET SOUNDS direction ("Guess I'm Dumb" precedes both "the Little Girl That I Once Knew" and "California Girls," which rank, arguably, as the first evidence of the PET SOUNDS style of arranging in the Beach Boys' catalog). Built upon a wonderful, tribal drum lick played by Hal Blaine, "Guess I'm Dumb" has many of the great WRECKING CREW session players involved (Carol Kaye, Glen Campbell, of course); it's a stunning full 'bells-and-whistles' production complete with backing vocals by girl group the Honeys, who were also produced by Brian Wilson for Capitol (and featured Marilyn Rovell/Marilyn Wilson, Brian's wife [American Spring]). In fact, the story is that the track started life as a session for a Beach Boys single, but Brian gifted it to Glen as a 'thank you' for Campbell's work filling in for Brian on bass and vocals during tours after Wilson stopped performing live. This is perhaps the most sought-after of Brian Wilson's '60s single productions because that track itself is so sublime and, in retrospect, historically significant.
