'This LP was recorded at the "Honky Chateau" countryside studios of Michel Magne in Normandy during the full moon phases of May, & June & September, 1971. It was produced by Pierre Lattes & engineered by Gilles SalleA Byg Virgin Production English Pressing
1st Original Virgin Pressing
- Disc with black & white twins labels
- Center labels mispressed with side B label pressed on both sides. Mistake corrected with large italics 1. and 2. side numbers added in alternative ink on either side.
- Matt sleeve with sheen
- These copies came with a white paper inner bag stamped GONG in the centre one side and a small GONG on the top of the other side

Sound-wise, Gong is a mix of the jazzier strain of progressive rock - Van de Graaf Generator comes up a lot in comparison because of the healthy use of saxophone, but the angular sound makes me think King Crimson was the biggest influence - but they ultimately sound like no one else because of the Canterbury scene absurdity (even though they were formed in France). Actually, this was my first taste of the Canterbury scene over a decade ago - progressive rock that was very much exempt of the (perceived) serious indulgences of prog rock by being very absurd to the point of humour. Contrary to the bigger progressive rock acts happening outside of the Canterbury scene where rock bands seemed to be very uninterested in matters of sex, Gong were clearly a little bit horny. On this album, “Tried So Hard” has this piece of wisdom, “You gotta lay the lady at the right time”; “O Mother” sees the narrator begging his mother not to do it again, the ‘it’ in question referring to “The man in the parlour,” whom she (we) knows what he’s after; the proper opener starts with a very sexual vocal. And this contributes to the absurdity because they’re not completely sincere about it. I like the ‘Radio Gnome Invisible’ trilogy of albums that Gong put out after this, but Camembert Electrique - which functions more or less as a precursor to them with the “Radio Gnome” skits - has always been a favourite for a simple reason: it’s just easier to get into.(review from rateyourmusic.com)
Vinyl: NM. They don't come around in this kind of condition very often. This heavy glossy vinyl has barely been played and is quite possibly unplayed. The sheen is stunning, like a record just bought over the counter! No marks , NO hairlines etc. On replay it only gets better. Great strong stereo separation with near silent (no crackle etc.) replay. NO jumps, NO skips, NO sticks etc.
Sleeve: VG+/EX. The sleeve has a bit of storage wear mostly on the edges. It is a very thin sleeve and for that reason quite vulnerable, this is in a far better condition than most I have come across. The spine is still fully legible although there is light wear. NO seam splits. The opening is super crisp. The pictures tell all.
