Description
Duke Ellington's greatest sideman, JOHNNY HODGES (AND HIS ORCHESTRA), gives out with a solid three minutes of swing, "GOOD QUEEN BESS." It is from the Ellington band's most exalted period, 1940-41, and the small groups rose with the tide.
The personnel is all the "usual suspects": COOTIE WILLIAMS (trumpet), LAWRENCE BROWN (trombone) JOHNNY HODGES (alto sax), HARRY CARNEY (baritone sax), DUKE ELLINGTON (piano), JIMMY BLANTON (bass) and SONNY GREER (drums). Murderer's Row!
This curious pressing is a single-sided twelve-inch vinyl, made in the '70s by Columbia, of a ten-inch Victor master (BS-053604 take 2), originally intended as a Bluebird release. It is an ALTERNATE TAKE of the issued record. It's EE+. Plays fantastically!
