First released in 1969 on the short-lived Stable label, Escalator is the sole album by the reformed Sam Gopal outfit - unbeknownst to some featuring a young Ian "Lemmy" Kilminster (then Willis) on vocals and guitar before his stints with Hawkwind and Motorhead. Malaysian tabla player Sam Gopal had already made his mark on London's underground scene with Sam Gopal's Dream, appearing at the 14 Hour Technicolour Dream and sharing bills with Hendrix and Pink Floyd, but it wasn't until this lineup with Roger D'Elia and Phil Duke that he committed anything to wax. Cut through with fuzz-off psych rock riffs and grounded by Gopal's Eastern percussion, Escalator includes a snarling take on Donovan's 'Season Of The Witch', and Lemmy originals like 'You're Alone Now' and the disarmingly tender 'Yesterlove'.
