Gordon : Gordon 1Y1 / 2Y1 1st Press Vertigo 1972
This very collectable first pressing plays with unbelievable audio on both sides! I have only owned 3/4 of these over the years and this is without doubt the finest example I have ever listened to. The clarity, depth and warmth of the audio is sensational and is almost 'as new' from start to finish. The final track has only a couple of light dull ticks and all other tracks grade as either Mint- or Mint! I cannot stress enough just how immaculate the playback is. The audio is so clean and 'fresh' and in my opinion this is a FINAL UPGRADE archive classic in every way. The vinyl itself is visually stunning also you will not be surprised to hear.
This is a case of the vinyl being hardly played but has probably been moved about a bit judging by the cover which does have some shelf wear as you can see from the photos. I can only grade as VG really but the original Vertigo inner remains in superb condition.
This first pressing was only pressed in limited numbers, one reason why it is so collectable, and has the 1Y1 / 2Y1 matrix. One of the earliest also with 111/111 on the run off also.

Visual description
The vinyl is in beautiful condition and still has an immaculate jet-black glossy sheen with no obvious marks or scratches. Under a bright light I can only see a small number of very faint hairlines and one small section of surface hairlines on S2. This is faint and can only be seen when you hold the vinyl at a certain angle, it is purely superficial. The run out grooves are pristine and the Vertigo labels are practically 'as new' with barely any spindle wear. A stunning example of this rare first pressing!
Play grading
The run in on S1 is so clean with no background and then the acoustic intro and opening vocal on 'The Saddest Song' play with beautifully with no intrusion, 'as new' sums it up perfectly. It continues to play with impeccable precision and I only 'picked up' a couple of barely audible dust ticks. The clarity and warmth of the audio is just stunning, I cannot praise it highly enough. Every note is enhanced and the original sonic quality is still very much in evidence and nowhere is this more obvious than on the acoustic end section. If you win this classic album just listen to the very long fade out you will see exactly what I mean. It is so quiet and yet the audio is as clean as it was when first pressed. I will grade as Mint- although I am sure many would omit the minus!
'At The End Of The Day' plays to the same high end standard with no intrusion. Once again the clarity of sound is flawless, as impressed as an unplayed record! It has that warmth and depth that you find on well preserved Vertigo pressings and it has another perfect fade out. Mint
The intro on 'Be Careful, There's A Baby In The House' has no interference and Gordon's opening vocal is equal to that. From then on it plays with exceptional quality, a more up tempo number you could say and yet the playback does not suffer for it. His powerful vocal is strong and clear and Mint is again deserved
The piano intro on 'I Won't Be Your Ruin' plays with pristine audio, honestly you would not believe how clean! The first vocal is just as impressive and it continues to play with such STUNNING quality.... I can't put it into words! It is so quiet and yet the playback is so delicate and precise and Mint is an easy grade to give.
'Collection Box' begins perfectly with a sublime intro and the opening vocal has no intrusion either. The first 'melodic' chorus is stunning and the following instrumental has not so much as a dust tick. From then on it plays with genuine precision for a final track. The second track on the side not written by Waller and you can tell. A very distinctive sound with more powerful audio and there is no distortion on that final instrumental. Every vocal and instrumental section play so clearly and if there is any distortion on the final 'vocal' section it is so so minimal. Running at nearly 8 minutes it is a stunning version and Mint- is a fair assessment of the audio.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
'Rocky Roads To Clear' on S2 plays with real quality from the get go. A perfect intro without any background and the opening vocal is just as strong. From then on it plays with stunning precision and the 'choral' vocal passages in particular play with such depth and clarity. Not one negative this is Mint from start to finish including the fade out.
The quiet intro on 'When This Whole Thing Began' plays to perfection and Gordon's first vocal section impresses on every level. As the tempo increases (slightly!) there is no drop in quality and every note is again so clean and succinct. There is literally nothing getting in the way of the audio and again Mint is deserved.
The intro on 'Stranger With A Black Dove' is 'as new' and the opening vocal is just as clean and 'fresh'. The first chorus has no intrusion either and it continues to play with a clarity and definition that is second to none. Once more I cannot emphasise enough just how strong and clear the audio is - it is very much a vocally driven track, quite powerful in certain passages, and yet the sonic quality is phenomenal. A superb track with a great melody and the only intrusion is a couple of very quiet ticks on the vocal end section. There is a slightly more obvious one but by then this near 8 minute track has finished and Mint- is deserved at the very least. What a version!
The gentle acoustic intro on 'Before You Go To Sleep' plays beautifully with no intrusion and the first vocal is just as clean. There are a couple of light ticks during the mid vocal but they are are quiet and non-intrusive in my opinion. The remainder plays perfectly with not one dust tick and overall Near Mint is about right. A stunning version to complete the album.
The Cover & Vertigo Inner
The cover is not on the same level as the vinyl and does have some wear. However, this is mainly restricted to the edges and a small section in the top right corner that has been coloured in. The edges and spine do have some rubbing / wear although the opening edge is very clean which is not surprising considering the stunning condition of the vinyl. The front cover is of course matte textured and just has some surface rub mainly near the top and bottom edge and some creases next to the spine plus that section as stated in the top right corner. The back cover is better with only some obvious surface rub near the bottom edge. Not a perfect cover but it is by no means in poor condition.
The original Vertigo inner sleeve is in great condition with no side splits and only very minimal age related fading around the edges. Very little creasing also.

The Royal Mail only insure up to a value of £250 so if an item sells for more it may be wise to use a courier service (e.g. Parcelforce or DPD). An extra insurance premium will be required but I will not know the exact amount until the final sale price is known. All vinyls are packaged in strong over-sized custom made mailers with plenty of extra cardboard protection. They are placed inside separate poly-lined inners outside the cover so as to avoid seam splits in transit and then placed inside a PVC sleeve to provide even more protection. I pride myself on my high quality packaging as my feed confirms and if any customer has any specific requirements I am more than happy to help.
The mailers I use cost £1.00 each and I will use anything between 3-5 cardboard stiffeners which cost approx £0.18 each. There is also the cost of the poly-lined inner and PVC sleeve to consider, it all adds up! Not forgetting that eBay take 10% of the shipping fee also!!
