George Curry the one man gospel quartette a capella on a red vinyl copy of the Phoenix Records label doing One Man Gospel Train / Fire Down Yonder in VG++ condition. The record shows a clean playing surface. I hear a little surface noise, but this may be a quality of the pressing. Please listen to the streaming audio of both sides of this actual record by using the eCommerce auction player. George Curry also recorded on the Ebony 78 label many years earlier. This may be his last release, on the small Los Angeles Phoenix label. Here is a bit of discographical information about him, that I dug up on the Internet:

Brother George Curry was billed as the "One Man Gospel Quartet." In the studio, multi-tracking was the key. How he could achieve any such effects in live performance remains a little difficult for us to figure, but Williams, whose promotional budget must have been microscopic, actually took out an advertisement in the Chicago Defender to promote bookings for him.

Hayes and Laughton in The Gospel Discogaphy 1943-1970 claim that Curry's Ebony session was made "c. 1948." A shellac pressing with the first Ebony label on it would be persuasive... Actually it was in 1948 that a secular-singing George Currie (as he spelled his name then) was briefly featured in the Chicago Defender. The blurb said of him, "boasting of four singing voices has recorded several numbers by singing bass, baritone, tenor, and lead that are solid. Recording carries all four numbers, sounding as real as if sung by Mills Brothers or Ravens." We don't know who Curry made his first record with.
According to Hayes and Laughton, Curry recorded one gospel single at an unknown date for Elko, and two in Hollywood, also at an unkown date, for a label called Phoenix. Both labels were active in the 1950s.

Here is an explanation of the grading system.

M(10) PERFECT! Label, vinyl, sound, all perfect…

M-(9) Maybe a few smudges, some very fine sleeve marks, etc. All glossy vinyl. Label pretty. Sounds great!! (sleeve marks are those tiny scratches with no effect on sound)

Ex+(8) or Vg++(8) A few sleeve marks or a few fine scratches, label still nice. Good gloss. appears-- still sounds great!! UK: EX+

Vg+(7) Probably lots of sleeve marks, OR several fine scratches, OR one or two more serious scratches, OR scuffs. Some gloss. Label is still real nice! Possibly a bit of dirt on it, etc. Overall, a fine copy. No noticeable record noise. UK:EX

Vg(6) It has sleeve marks AND: numerous very fine scratches, or a few more serious scuffs. Still nice looking overall. May be noise in quiet passages, but still sounds good! Still some gloss. Label is beginning to show signs of wear, but not serious. UK: Ex-, Or VG++.

Vg-(5) LOTS of fine scratches and almost no gloss. OR a few serious scratches, OR scuffed. Label is possibly worn. Plays with noise which doesn’t overwhelm the music. Gloss is possible, if the scratches are bad enough.UK: VG+

G+(4) COMPLETELY covered with fine scratches, OR a mix of fine and serious scratches or other defects. Label may be pretty trashed, but is generally readable. Plays with hiss, crackle or distortion, but not awful. UK:VG

G-(3) A filler. LOTS of serious scratches, definitely some audible. Noise is more prominent than the music. Label is BARELY readable. BUT: it plays ok… UK: VG- Between G and F

F(2) Almost unacceptable. Plays through. Label seriously worn. UK: G

P(1) POOR Gots lotsa scratches, scratches, scratches etc. I will NEVER list one like this.
