Info: Rare original pressing double vinyl album featuring the music collected by Edward Bunting at the historic Belfast Harpers Festival of 1792, and performed by Grainnie Yeats with well-informed reconstructions of the original harpers' repertoire and style, played on wire- and gut-strung harps, as well as her singing of the songs that go with some of these tunes.
"In 1792 a committee of Belfast's citizens organised a festival so that the harpers of the country could demonstrate their art to the city's inhabitants. This was the last gathering of traditional harpers in history, and to it only eleven musicians could come. By a most fortunate piece of foresight, the organist of St. Anne's Cathedral, Edward Bunting, was commissioned to write down the tunes the harpers played, and so a large quantity of the old music was preserved - music of the countryside, songs of the Gaelic poets, modern eighteenth century compositions, and a few examples of the bardic music of medieval Ireland. The name most common on the harpers' lips at the festival was 'Carolan', the name of the most celebrated musician of early eighteenth century Ireland. On these records Grainne Yeats presents Carolan's music and the music of his fellow harper-composers along with the songs of the people, in her inimitable, authentic way, using, on some tracks, harps built on the model and played in the manner of ancient instruments still preserved."
Comes in original gatefold picture sleeve with 4-page booklet stapled on the inside, containing notes in Gaelic and English as well as photos and descriptions of the harps used. Has original plain white paper inner sleeves.
Both vinyls in MINT condition! Both are absolutely pristine and shiny, look as good as new, and may never have been played by the look of it! Labels are perfectly clean and i can't see any spindle marks.
Sleeve in excellent condition with just a bit of mild general storage wear. Booklet still intact with both staples in place and no creases.
Inner sleeves in excellent+ condition with no splits.
