Brief Info: Album number eight and follow-up to the popular ‘We’re An American Band’. Todd Rundgren produced but proving less successful than than it’s predecessor. The band name somewhat misleading, Grand Funk played hard rock. Original copies had a very specialised cover: the artwork and poster in 3D, the cover-attached glasses had to be used to get the effect, hence most are removed from the cover making those still attached very elusive indeed. The 3D glasses have a die-cut tab on the left to grip to pull the glasses off the cover, the glasses are held on by tiny tabs and some have pulled, but some are attached and firm. The nose area is perforated and still unfolded. As stated above, this includes the poster and it is unmounted and superb along with the 1974 tour and Fan Club inner – neither easy to find. The record has a few surface marks but superficial and the record plays very well indeed with top sound and production. It is the first example of this album I have seen in years, although UK pressed records exist, they still included the American packaging due to it being very specialised and difficult to manufacture.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and given all the facts, to even find one still in one piece is very difficult indeed. 3D graphics with the cut, perforated glasses unused. A single matt cover that was manufactured in the band’s native America. Includes poster and inner sleeve as stated above.

Cover Front: A complex cover which I have outlined above. The most important factors are the 3D glasses are still attached although a few tiny tabs have pulled. These glasses appear near mint. The cover has minimal rubbing with few creases. The left edge centre has a fine neat split, this ‘bridge’ between the spine and glasses tab is around half-an-inch wide, so immensely fragile and few will avoid this issue, here very neat anyway. Deep colour retained with no sticker issues, this immensely fragile front will never prove easy to find better, and not actually seen often at all.

Cover Back: The back is superb with little to fault at all, the lack of rubbing, creasing and ring wear make this exceptional.

Top Edge: One small chip and most of any rubbing near the right end which is small. Still straight, neat with no splits to any edge folds.

Bottom Edge: Any rubbing gentle and light.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, reasonably sharp with little wear, some light thickening seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: This has fared superbly with barely any wear. Solid, straight with minimal hint of compression. One fine hairline crease in line with the fine front split, but the lack of rubbing to the spine surface is great news. All text present, if centred a little high in manufacture.

Corners: Light corner tip rubbing to the right pair, minimal traces to the spine ones. Excellent shape retained with no knocks or dinks.

Cover Summary: An immensely fragile specialised cover and rare with the 3D glasses still attached. I am sure a high percentage of owner’s would not have resisted pulling off the glasses to view the 3D effect of the cover, so ones that are still intact are elusive and scarce. Also hugely prone to all forms of wear and damage, finding it with so little overall will never prove easy. Quite an elusive cover in its own right outside the United States, all considered, this is a very impressive example.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: and looks even better with just a little creasing near one lower corner. Still clean, fresh and attractive. The coloured side lists all the 1974 Grand Funk tour dates and the lower part is a Fan Club coupon, here fully intact with nothing removed or written on. The other side has the songs and credit text. A neat, small bottom edge movement split was very carefully and neatly repaired by myself and barely even registers. Both left and right edges are fully intact and the top entrance neat, crisp and untorn. This is made with very thin paper and was not lined, finding this better will also prove very difficult.

The 3D Poster: EXCELLENT(++): a single folded card 3D graphic poster, printed on one side only and unmounted. The white back has nothing to fault and barely aged at all. The front side is also superb with only a little fine and light rubbing the manufactured fold here-and-there. Very clean and fresh with minimal few fine creases, also rare and often missing altogether, it will not prove easy to find better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks light as seen under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, any visuals are superficial and American records do seem to mark more easily than most. The important factor is the record plays great and was an enjoyable play-grade. Visually still a very fine record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality, less-seen Grand Funk album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Superbly produced by Todd Rundgren, who also features, any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this early US pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
