I'll never forget listening to this show on the radio back in '78 in great anticipation of hearing The Dead and seeing what might be in store for me as I had tickets to see them on 11/30 at Madison Square Garden. A smokin' Jack Straw kicked things off but it was apparent early that something was not right with Garcia. His voice was creaky, shrill, nasal and congested. Song two made that even more clear as a game but ailing Garcia gave it his all during Sugaree. It was now a forgone conclusion that Jerry was pretty sick. Still, the show is red hot and even with Garcia's vocals not there, the playing was uncanny. Still the best versions of Jack Straw and Sugaree that I have ever heard. Oh yeah, after the show Garcia was hospitalized with virul pneumonia and bronchitis. :( Those tickets for 11/30 at MSG would not be valid now until 1/7/79 when the Dead re-scheduled the shows they had to cancel due to Jerry's illness. It was ok, the '79 show was hot and I had the distinction of attending the Grateful Dead's first ever gig at MSG! This was issued as a bootleg album called 'for dead heads only' sans ollin arrageed.
