Album Notes :

Grateful Dead: Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir (vocals, guitar); Donna Jean Godchaux (vocals); Keith Godchaux (keyboards); Phil Lesh (bass); Bill Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart (drums).Recorded live at the Sportatorium, Pembroke Pines, Florida on May 22, 1977.By May of 1977, the Grateful Dead's touring machine was once again clicking on all cylinders. Twelve months removed from their self-imposed retirement, and with Mickey Hart back in tow, the Dead naturally fell back into the role of wandering, hippie-jazzbo minstrels. And as the band kept playing on (60 shows in 1977 alone), their power as a group coalesced once more.As this Florida shows demonstrates, the late-'70s Dead actively supplemented their open-form tendencies with rock-centric power and precision. On this evening, their every trick was carted out onto the stage. Fusion-minded, multi-pronged pieces such as "Lazy Lightning/Supplication" and "Help on the Way/Slipknot!/Franklin's Tower" not only kick out the jams, but do so fluidly, highlighting the compositions' playfulness. Standards like "Dancin' in the Streets" (disco-fied for the 1970s) add more than a touch of white boy funk to the proceedings. And the closing quartet of Garcia's anthems (particularly the final salvo of "Terrapin Station/Morning Dew") shows the performers knew a little bit about on-stage timing. In all, a perfect example of their 1977 peak
