Description
The hard-to-find 6-record box set Dick's Picks Volume Four presents live performances by the original lineup of the Grateful Dead, recorded at the Fillmore East on February 13-14, 1970. Rating the outer box is complicated, at least a little, by the deliberately distressed-looking packaging. Ignoring the deliberate appearance of wear, three actual imperfections are noticeable: a bit of shelf wear on the bottom face of the box lid, some fine surface scratches that are most apparent in bright side light, and about a half-inch crack in one of the bottom corners. As for the individual record covers (which are designed to look like old reel-to-reel tape boxes), it seems to me that all of the apparent wear is actually part of the artistry of the packaging, and they are essentially near-mint. As for the heavyweight records, the vinyl is glossy and scratch free, though some scuffing of some of the record surfaces is noticeable in bright side light. The good news, though, is that this visual imperfection has no effect on the sound quality of the performances.
