And now, ladies and gentlemen…I have a rare privilege of presenting one of the hardest-to-find Grateful Dead albums in their long and extensive discography. The brutally rare ORIGINAL 1967 MONO pressing of their first, self-titled album. When this great, freshman effort was recorded, the band’s original line-up consisted of Bob Weir, Pigpen, Bill Kreutzman, Jerry Garcia and Phil Lesh (credited on that album in this particular order; apparently, the order of seniority in the band at that point hadn’t crystalized yet; they still functioned - and continued to function for many years - as a free, democratic, anarchistic unit). The songs on the album have more in common with the mid-60’s R&B which the band covered at this point of their career - with some early psychedelic ornamentation and arrangements - than with what Dead later became known for (extensive improvisations). The sound is gorgeous , punchy mono, in some cases it appears that the mixes are slightly different - better, I’d say - that on the stereo version of the album, but I am no expert in Grateful Dead, please contact me if you have any questions. The songs are: The golden road - Beat it on down the line - Good Mornin’ Little School Girl - Cold Rain and Snow - Sittin’ on top of the world - Cream Puff War - Morning Dew - New, New Minglewood Blues - Viola Lee Blues. A Rare psychedelic relic and a must for any serious Deadhead.

·                               CONDITION:

·                               THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE SIDE 1 OF THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible on this side, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          WE GRADE SIDE 2 OF THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those sides that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(c)             The record comes in a poly-lined inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years!

(d)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(e)           Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 15:1.

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Two "ex libris" stamps noted on the back panel

-         Cover has some ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4  (front side) and 5 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging   (nothing significant).

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine  (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

-         Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)

-         Cover has two corners slightly worn / dinged  / bent.(nothing significant)

-         The cover has a few tiny scratch marks on the front side   (nothing significant)

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
