GRATEFUL DEAD “Skull And Roses” Live 1971 1st Pittman Press Vinyl and Cover VG+.
Really nice original vintage copy of this iconic Grateful Dead double Lp release. The vinyl looks great, no consequential marks for all four sides. The olive green WB labels with the “Skull and Roses” b&w drawing insures the original vintage. The Gatefold Cover has some rubbing, a shadow of ring wear, small corner dings but overall intact with no losses…think how many seeds were rolled off of it! The inner sleeves are the original paper “Warner/Reprise Loss Leaders” samplers offers. There is some yellowing with age, and partial seam splits, but intact. Taken as a whole, this is a beautiful 50+ year old First State copy.
In some ways, this double live album released in 1971 is the defining recording for the Grateful Dead. The iconic cover art by Alton Kelley with additions by Stanley Mouse. The first on wax versions of “Bertha”, “Playing In The Band”, and “Wharf Rat”, and definitive live versions of “The Other One”, and “Not Fade Away”. Inside, an invitation “Dead Freaks Unite” to get on the bands mailing list…social media of the 70s!
The band wanted to name the album “Skull Fuck”, but Warner Bros. could not market a release so named. It came out with no title, and the Dead Heads and record retail settled on the Skull and Roses descriptor. This was the first release by the Dead to sell over 500,000 copies and awarded Gold Record status. If collecting Dead vinyl or vintage Rock this copy of the original release must be considered.
