Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only quite light, very fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. This quite delicate album plays superbly and more than compensates for the usual cover edge wear.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 160 grams. Very heavy, later pressings rarely even came close.

Rarity: Very scarce. This record did not even chart in the UK and original copies are very difficult to find. Most seen are later pressings on either the new green label with the Kinny catalogue number. This indeed so late, some orange label copies show dual matrixes which are: WS 1869 A-1 *T (K 46049 A1) / WS 1869 B-1 *T (K 46049 B1). This is one of the very few I have seen that ONLY have the correct and ultimate first WS matrixes and NO Kinney ones at all.

Brief Info: The band’s fourth studio album and fifth overall and this marked a change in direction. A far more softer style that is more like CSNY with vocal harmonies and a more folk-country sound – it is my personal favourite album within their sizeable catalogue. It all works perfectly and this album is regarded by many ‘Dead Heads’ as their finest ever album. Popular in the US but a poor seller in the UK, this was issued right on the fringe of the changeover to the new green label and new Kinney catalogue numbers, this copy being a genuine ‘full’ first issue with NO reference to Kinney as all. I personally regard this as one of the rarest original UK Grateful Dead albums. Now regarded as a classic album and early UK orange label copies are very scarce indeed and seldom found in anything like decent condition. The cover is one of the most challenging to find in decent condition, often they had Kinney stickers applied that many pulled off with disasterous results. This one is far from perfect with significant edge rubbing, especially on the bottom storage edge, but the main front and back are really quite impressive with little at all. The star piece however is the record: this a massive 160 gram heavyweight and it plays beautifully. Nothing for me is more important than sound, and on that, this record really delivers. So not for the perfectionists, but this genuine first issue record will sure take a lot of beating.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD: and only marked down for edge rubbing. A single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. This only has the original WS 1869 number and no stickers. Printed in England by West Brothers Printers Ltd. Also the original heavy-duty polylined inner is included, this has lot of writing (in French) by the one and only owner who bought this from new.

Cover Front: The main graphic and area is in really lovely condition, but some moderate rubbing is seen on the edges, the most on the bottom on the right half. Lesser on the top and spine edges and the opening remains neat (and also untrimmed or enhanced). Indeed the graphic is little short of unworn and looking impressive. This has avoided rubbing, ringwear and even creasing. Being honest, I almost expect edge rubbing on this cover that almost seems incapable of avoiding it.

Cover Back: The back is inverted compared to the front e.g. it has to be flipped top to bottom rather than left to right – I think all the originals were the same. Again, the main artwork area is barely worn, and the edges this side show far less rubbing than the front.

Top Edge: Mainly moderate, slightly patchy rubbing, still very straight.

Bottom Edge: Moderate to quite heavy rubbing (towards the corners). The card being thin and quite soft, this one always rubs, but better here than on the more interesting areas.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, still quite sharp with little wear with any thickening or burring mild and light even viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid and straight with minimal compression, but made quite thin. Thus again, this has some rubbing, but in context only fairly light. Some text however has rubbed but a fairly high percentage remains including the important WE 1869 catalogue number.

Corners: Moderate to fairly heavy corner tip rubbing with fair shape retained.

Cover Summary: A difficult sleeve and an original one, beware of substitutes with the different catalogue number. With the most important areas being the front and back still looking very impressive, and most significant wear confined to the top and more especially to the bottom edges, this should still please many collectors. Finding one of these anything like ‘perfect’ is an immense task, the heavy record inside never ‘cover-friendly’, which reitterates how fine the back and front really area. So not for the more discerning this time.

The Inner Sleeve: NO GRADE: because this has writing on both sides, mostly in French with the song titles and times (in English) on the other – any grading would be purely subjective. This the heavy-duty polylined inner that is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text. Age darkened a little with some natural crinkle, but two immaculate window circles and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): in contast to the cover wear, the record has hardly any noteworthy blemishes and plays beautifully. A very impressive first issue and copy that is very clean with lovely shine and heavily pressed. A copy with modest plays on all the evidence with any surface marks ultra fine and faint as seen critically under bright angled light, there are no penetrating stylus marks and indeed when viewed in normal room daylight conditions, this record looks fantastic. As stated, the cover is not for the more discerning, but the record certainly is and should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rarer original UK pressed classic plays up to and most all even above its high visual grading with barely anything to fault. This too with more delicate acoustic music and harmony vocals, never the easiest for vintage vinyl. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Minimal surface sounds and no pressing flaws or noises, overall, an exceptional clean pressing for a fairly challenging album. No great volume passages, this is a more gentle album with plenty of vocals, as stated similar to Déjà vu era CSNY and fans of that classic album will enjoy this one too. An impressive record to please many fans. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This record will prove very difficult to find significantly better on the elusive orange label and can be strongly recommended, indeed the disc itself could prove a significant upgrade for many. Betters covers can possibly be found, but the record will prove harder.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
