VINYL is EX+
Full Gloss, extremely clean vinyl, a shade off of NM, with a very, very few barely noticeable sleeve hairlines, viewed under hard bright light. LP plays great - quiet, noise-free grooves, except for very beginning of Side 1 at edge, where there is some low level background noise in first few revolutions - then quiets right down to clear, clean sound the rest of the way. Side 2 is clear, clean and quiet, start to finish. Labels are Immaculate both sides. .
COVER is NEAR MINT
Still in the clean, complete original Shrink Wrap, with no creases, writing, wear, soil or marks. All edges straight, all corners sharp. Seams and spine are 100% intact with no wear or splits. Spine titles are crisp, sharp and completely legible.

Grateful Dead were already established as paragons of the free-form, improvisational San Francisco psychedelic sound when they abruptly shifted gears for the acoustic-themed Workingman's Dead, a lovely exploration of American roots music illuminating the group's own Blues, Folk and Old-time Jug origins.

The lilting Uncle John's Band, (their first-ever radio hit) opens the record and perfectly summarizes its subtle, spare beauty; complete with a new focus on more concise songs and tighter arrangements, the approach worked brilliantly.

Songs like Dire Wolf, High Time, Easy Wind and the other big hit from the album, Casey Jones all became classics in the DEAD canon, both in decades of Live Performance, and also as Dead Head favorites - firmly implanted in the Grateful Dead mythos going forward.

All songs were originals, almost entirely Robert Hunter/Jerry Garcia compositions, with one (Cumberland Blues) Hunter/Garcia/Lesh and one (Easy Wind) penned entirely by Hunter.

Despite its sharp contrast to the epic live space jams on which the group's legend primarily rests, Workingman's Dead nonetheless spotlights the Dead at their most engaging, stripped of all excess to reveal the true essence of their craft - an ethos and style that would be luminously continued in their follow-up album “American Beauty”.
