GTO'S (Girls Together Outrageously) - Permanent Damage 1968 UK Straight First A1/B1 STS 1059 Psych Avant
The GTO's began as a collection of wildly outrageous girls who frequented the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles and hung out with the bands and groups who performed in that area during the late 1960s, such as The Mothers Of Invention.
They effectively coined the phrase "Groupies" and initially became the Cherry Sisters, then became a spontaneous performance-art collective known as the Laurel Canyon Ballet Company- which was an opening act for gigs led by Frank Zappa. In 1969 Zappa collected this group together, producing them as one of his side projects, as the GTO's (an acronym for Girls Together Outrageously).
There were seven original members of the GTO's: Miss Christine (aka Christine Frka), Miss Mercy (aka Judith Edra Peters [nee], aka Mercy Fontenot), Miss Lucy (aka Luz Selenia Offerrall [nee], aka Lucy Offerall), Miss Sandra (aka Sandra Lynn Rowe [nee], aka Sandra Leano, aka Sandra Lynn Harris), Miss Sparky (aka Linda Sue 'Sparky' Parker), Miss Pamela (aka Pamela Ann Miller [nee], Pamela Des Barres) and Miss Cinderella (also spelled Miss Cynderella, aka Cynthia Sue Wells).
The resultant album, 'Permanent Damage', consequently featured a number of renowned musicians, including Jeff Beck, Lowell George, Ry Cooder, even Rod Stewart and Zappa himself, who happened to be around the LA 'freak scene' during these psychedelic and experimental music times. The group also crossed paths with the notorious Plaster Casters Of Chicago, who became the subject upon two of their album tracks.
The E.J. Day Group unlaminated card cover is conservatively graded as VG+ with some storage, edge and corner wear. The spine clearly shows some wear but the text can still be read. There is evidence of ring-wear front and back together with some creasing which is more noticeable on the rear. However in saying this, and bearing in the mind that the cover is 54 years old, this cover will be rare in this condition and certainly makes this a copy to keep. The inner sleeve shows signs of age and is undamaged apart from a small 1.5cm split at the top right corner. It is graded as VG
What makes this item special and sets it apart from the rest is the vinyl itself which was pressed by CBS in their Aston Clinton Plant. Apart from a small scuff across Track One on Side 2 the vinyl has not been played more than a few times at the most. Including Track One on Side 2, there is very little in the way of static, pops or clicks and this does not really impact on the 'enjoyment' of the album as a whole. It plays perfectly which is important where some of the content consists of a spoken voice. An excellent example of this very rare (in this condition) and little seen album.
Because of the scuff on Side 2, the disc is conservatively graded as VG+. I'm sure others would easily rate this as being EX or even EX+.
