N.W.A.

Real Name: Niggaz Wit Attitudes Profile: US American group, known especially for Gangsta Rap. N.W.A. stands for »Niggaz Wit Attitudes«. They were active from 1986 to 1991 and again in 1999-2000.

Ruthless released "Panic Zone" in 1987 with Macola Records, which was later included on the compilation N.W.A. and the Posse. N.W.A was still in its developing stages, and only credited on four of the eleven tracks, notably the uncharacteristic electro hop record "Panic Zone," "8-Ball," and "Dopeman," which marked the first collaboration of Arabian Prince, DJ Yella, Dr. Dre and Ice Cube. Hispanic rapper Krazy-Dee co-wrote "Panic Zone," which was originally called "Hispanic Zone," but the title was later changed when Dr. Dre advised Krazy-Dee that the word "hispanic" would hinder sales. Also included was Eazy's solo track "Boyz-n-the Hood."

In 1988, rapper MC Ren joined N.W.A. and later that year, the group released their debut album Straight Outta Compton. It sold poorly until early 1989, when MTV and radio began playing the hits "Straight Outta Compton", "Gangsta Gangsta" and "Express Yourself", which resulted in the album being sold in over three million copies. The album itself reached number 37 in the Billboard Top 200, while it reached number 9 on Billboard's Top Soul LPs.

Ice Cube left in December 1989 over royalty disputes; having written almost half of the lyrics on Straight Outta Compton himself, he felt he was not getting a fair share of the money and profits. He wasted little time putting together his solo debut, 1990's AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted, but he avoided mentioning his former label mates. Instead of breaking up, N.W.A. decided to continue without Ice Cube, releasing the EP 100 Miles and Runnin', which sold poorly but went platinum. Their 1991 follow-up Efil4zaggin (also referred to as Niggaz4Life) was not as successful as Straight Outta Compton, though it did go platinum and reach number one on the Billboard 200. Shortly after the release of Efil4zaggin, N.W.A. called it quits. All members had continued making music since then, with Dr. Dre going solo and Eazy-E continuing to run Ruthless Records and make more music until he died of AIDS in 1995.

Born Eric Wright in Compton, Calif. in 1964, gangsta rapper/producer Eazy-E grew up on the rough streets of Los Angeles, where he dealt drugs for a living after dropping out of high school. In the mid-'80s Wright founded a rap record company, Ruthless Records, with profits from his drug dealing, recruiting emerging rap talents such as Dr. Dre, HBO and Ice Cube. In 1986 Eazy-E, as he called himself, began a rap career by forming Niggaz Wit Attitudes (known as N.W.A.) with Dre, Cube, DJ Yella, the Arabian Prince, and the D.O.C. (MC Ren joined in 1987.) Over the next few years NWA became the most notorious group in rap, penning vulgar rhymes which celebrated urban violence, denigrated women and advocated killing police officers. Eazy-E was an instrumental member of the group, his high-pitched whiny voice becoming a trademark of the group, now considered the progenitors of the "gangsta rap" genre. When N.W.A. split up in 1991, Eazy-E went on to a high-profile full-time solo career, though he had actually released his solo debut, Eazy-Duz-It, in 1988, while still in N.W.A. Most of his solo raps covered the same group as N.W.A., though a prominent feud with Dr. Dre also inspired many anti-Dre rhymes. Eazy-E also continued running Ruthless Records, producing new artists, and making frequent guest appearances on other rappers' albums. After releasing several popular EPs, Eazy-E suddenly discovered, much to his horror, that he was dying of AIDS; he died in March 1995, only a month after first being diagnosed with the disease.

Above The Law

Profile: Rap group from Pomona, CA. Signed to Eazy-E's Ruthless Records in 1989 through the help of Lay Law. Their first Album Livin' Like Hustlers was selected as one of The Source's 100 Best Rap Albums. With the single "Murder Rap" they made their breakthrough.
For the Tracks "4 The Funk Of It" and "Call It What U Want", the group can be considered as the "true founders" of G-Funk. After the 2nd album Black Mafia Life Go Mack left the group.
They third and last album on Ruthless Records Uncle Sam's Curse is regarded to be one of the best G-Funk albums ever released.
After Eazy-E's death the group switched to Tommy Boy Music and released two albums Time Will Reveal in 1996 and Legends in 1998 on the label.
In 1999 they left Tommy Boy and went independent on their own record label West World Records and released one group album Forever Rich Thugs : Book One on this way. At the same time they made another short-lived record deal on Suge Knight's Tha Row Records (formerly known as Death Row Records (2)).
In 2004 Cold 187um also known as Big Hutch was indicted for conspiracy to traffic one thousand pounds of marijuana and put the group in complete silence. After Cold 187um's drop out in 2008 he released his 3rd solo album Fresh Out The Pen, presented by Above The Law. The long awaited 7th group album "Sex, Money And Music" was released in 2009, although the singles were released years before.

Currently they're working on their 8th group album called "Reloaded", containing production by Cold 187um, Tha Chill, Sandman and DJ Battlecat.

KMG, one of the founding members of ATL, died on July 7, 2012.
