Mainstream of Jazz Vol 1,2,3 - One of three LPs recorded by the Gerry Mulligan Sextet of 1955-56, this set includes plenty of lesser-known songs including "Mainstream," "Igloo" and "Lollypop." With such strong soloists as baritonist Mulligan, the always swinging tenor of Zoot Sims, valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer and trumpeter Jon Eardley, this was a classic West Coast style jazz band and each of its recordings are worth acquiring.
The second of three LPs recorded by the 1955-56 Gerry Mulligan sextet before it broke up, this fine out-of-print set features such excellent players as baritonist Mulligan, valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, Zoot Sims on tenor and either Jon Eardley or Don Ferrara on trumpet. Highlights include "Makin' Whoopie," a Duke Ellington medley and "Westward Walk." Excellent music from one of the top "West Coast Jazz" groups; this band was actually based in New York.
Gerald Joseph Mulligan (April 6, 1927 – January 20, 1996), also known as Jeru,was an American jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, composer and arranger.Though primarily known as one of the leading jazz baritone saxophonists—playing the instrument with a light and airy tone in the era of cool jazz—Mulligan was also a significant arranger working with Claude Thornhill, Miles Davis, Stan Kenton, and others. His piano-less quartet of the early 1950s with trumpeter Chet Baker is still regarded as one of the best cool jazz ensembles. Mulligan was also a skilled pianist and played several other reed instruments. Several of his compositions including "Walkin' Shoes" and "Five Brothers", have become standards.
John Haley "Zoot" Sims (October 29, 1925 – March 23, 1985) was an American jazzsaxophonist, playing mainly tenor but also alto (and, later, soprano) saxophone. He first gained attention in the "Four Brothers" sax section of Woody Herman's big band, afterward enjoying a long solo career, often in partnership with fellow saxmen Gerry Mulligan and Al Cohn.
