Description
As all Queen fans and people who've seen the movie, Bohemian Rhapsody, will know, Brian May, Roger Taylor and Tim Staffell formed a band called Smile, before Tim left to join Humpy Bong, leaving the door open for Freddie to sing for Smile and help to evolve the band into Queen, before John Deacon joined. The rest, as they say, is history.
Recorded in the very early days of the journey to global rock domination, this album captures the embryonic, yet unmistakable, Queen sound, With Brian's instantly recognisable guitar riffs and occasional vocals, Roger's characteristic drumming and falsetto vocals, and the beginnings of the familiar Queen harmonies before Freddie and john joined.
Originally recorded at sessions in 1969 and 1970, this Gettin' Smile album was re-issued in Japan in the 80s on the Mercury label, and distributed through Nippon Phonograph before being imported into the UK shortly after, and bought, new, by me in 1988 from a long since closed specialist record store, Rival Records, in Plymouth.
The 12 -inch vinyl mini-LP is complete with original sleeve, packaging, obi and insert, and is in excellent condition throughout, having been played only once, by me in my late teens on my Dad's Garrard record player - I'm now 50!
The six tracks on the album include Doin' Alright (the only one to subsequently appear on a Queen album), Blag, April Lady, Polar Bear, Earth and Step on Me. An important centrepiece to any Queen collection and a must for any serious record collector.
Issue number 18PP-1(M) with 1640 Yen pricing on OBI and sleeve back, which, I understand, makes it the extremely rare and more desirable 2nd edition.
