A real artifact from the UK undergound. A three LP set with all material donated by the artists to help pay the costs of putting on the very first Glastonbury festival (which was a free festival - compare that idea with the corporate sponsored monstrosity Glastonbury is now, how things have changed!). This contains loads of live recordings exclusive to this LP making it an essential addition to any collection of UK underground or progressive rock. Highlight for me is the superb Mighty Baby track, this band had the potential to be the greatest UK rock band ever, this is one of their best recordings and exclusive to this album, also only available here are the Grateful Dead, Pink Fairies, Hawkwind, Gong and Edgar Broughton tracks, most of which are side long epics.

A limited edition at the time housed in deluxe packaging which is also very much a product of it’s time. When I started collecting records in the late seventies this was a sought after, expensive, record even then. Now, it’s virtually impossible to find in decent condition, this is a nice copy but it’s not complete, the outer plastic bag is missing and there'sonly one insert present.

Condition: Sleeve

Huge six fold sleeve depicting the legendary pyramid stage on one side and and a large black and white photo of the campsite on the other together with some out there Barney Bubbles sleeve notes. Because of the way that the sleeve is folded most copies of this suffer badly from wear around the folds and crease to the edges but this copy is actually pretty good.

All six panels of the front (the Pyramid side) are clean and damage free. There’s no tears or writing anywhere. There is the very occasional, very small, very light creases here and there, mostly around the folded corners but these are not serious and are nothing to worry about. There is some occasional light wear around the folded edges but this is very slight and again nothing to worry about.

The black and white side of the sleeve is also in good clean condition, no tears, no writing, very occasional, very small very light creases again mostly around the folded corners. Because this is actually the inside of the sleeve the wear around the folded edges isn’t as bad as on the front side and hardly visible at all.

One insert is present, the cut out and make dome which is, ironically, the one which is usually missing. It’s in excellent condition with no damage at all.

Condition: Records

The records themselves are all in fine condition. All three discs are extremely clean and have a nice dark sheen. Viewed in normal light all three discs have the occasional very light marks, just some hairlines and the occasional very light paper scuff, nothing serious at all, if you were to see this in a shop or at a fair you’d be impressed by the visual condition. When examined under a very harsh lamp a few more extremely light marks are revealed but again these are nothing to worry about and certainly nothing which will spoil your enjoyment of the music.

All six labels are in pretty much perfect condition, very clean with no wear or damage.

When played all three discs sound fine. All play with clean clear sound, although the nature of some of the recordings, recorded live at an outdoor festival with what would now be regarded as primitive equipment mean that some of the performances sound a little muddy, sound quality is always very listenable and enjoyable though. It could, maybe, have used a little more “production” but that would have robbed the recordings of their authentic live atmosphere.which is representitive of the live festival experience of the time. There is the odd pop or click audible now and again but these are infrequent and always well below the level of the music and so do not spoil the listening experience in any way, certainly there’s no major damage, no deep scratches (or even any light scratches for that matter), no repeating clicks, no distortion or groovewear, certainly no jumping or sticking, in fact nothing spoilt my enjoyment of the excellent music while I was playing this, I even played some sides twice because I enjoyed them so much.

This is actually the copy which sat in my own collection for many years until I was lucky enough to find a mintish copy a couple of years ago, I have fairly high standards when it comes to the condition of my records and I was quite happy with this one so I can’t imagine the buyer having any problems. If you pass this one by then finding a significantly better copy of this record will prove to be very challenging.
