This is a collection of 4 separate non-commercial RCA Special Products LPs of original performances of the Glenn Miller Band, as sold in the late 70s and early 80s only at the gift shop of the U.S. Air Force Museum at three Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. The remastered tracks were culled mainly from British enthusiasts who had made recordings of Miller’s band from radio broadcasts using home record cutters. DISC 1 (1976, Vol. 1) commemorates the newly expanded Miller Band exhibit in 1976 at the Air Force Museum and includes 14 tunes; other artists on this LP (as well as on several tracks on all the discs) are pianist Mel Powell, drummer Ray McKinley, and vocalist Johnny Desmond. The music on DISC 2 (1980, Vol. 3) is made up exclusively of tracks from the tapes of Burt Beckham, a British collector who presented the Museum with copies of tapes of his library so that there would always be at least one permanent repository of the music. DISC 3 (1982, Vol. 4) has the special feature of music used in German Propaganda Broadcasts in 1944; the disc also includes a “historic document”: a photo copy of a typed roster (for a hotel?) with room-and-floor assignments for each band member, dated June 15, 1944. (Interestingly, Miller is identified as “Capt. Alton G. Miller.” That is his birth name, but he had supposedly changed it to “Glenn” by dropping the “Alton.” Also, Johnny Desmond’s last name is shown as “Desemone”; his actual birth name was “Giovanni De Simone.”) DISC 4 (1984, Vol. 5) is a SEALED copy, containing more German Propaganda Broadcasts and a section part titled “Swing Shift.” These are now exceptionally rare LPs, and have probably been rarely sold all together.
