Ultra rare limited edition set issued privately by the Gaudeamus Foundation to document their 1968 music competition, showcasing an amazing array of brilliant young performers and rarely-heard experimental works drawing from the winners of a competition held at the peak of 20th century classical's postwar avant-gardism. The first disc contains the winning international composers, the second has the winning Dutch composers, and the last has the winning interpreters (each of whom perform modern works of their own choosing). Globokar's piece won first prize at the competition; it's a "psychodrama" that features 4 choirs simultaneously telling the stories of 4 different dreams from texts by poet Edoardo Sanguineti. It involves phonetics, semantics, and the translation of words into music, and is performed by the Radio Grand Choir under Marinus Voorberg, Frans Muller, Carel Laout, and Meindert Boekel. The prize-winning performers are the great Michael Ranta (percussion on the Lachenmann piece, one of the highlights of the set), Ronald Lumsden (piano on the Messiaen piece), Nancy Voigt (piano on the Brons), and Anita Krochmalska (piano on the De Leeuw). Other players include Lien Doets-Sevenstern (harp), the Gaudeamus String Quartet, the Rijnmond Wind Quintet, Ileana Melita (mezzo-soprano), the Utrecht Symphony Orchestra under Paul Hupperts, and the Radio Symphony Orchestra under Roelof Krol. Ton de Leeuw was among the judges. Includes several minimal-looking tall yellow cards, each of which contain extensive notes in English, to top out this beautiful box set.

artist info from album notes etc.:
Globokar is a French-Yugoslavian avant garde trombonist, composer, and conductor who studied under Andre Hodeir, Rene Leibowitz, Luciano Berio, and Andre Lafosse, worked with Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Henri Pousseur, Mauricio Kagel, Toru Takemitsu, and Louis Andriessen, associated with Salvatore Sciarrino and Helmut Lachenmann, served as a department head at IRCAM, and formed the New Phonic Art improv group with Michel Portal, Carlos Roque Alsina, and Jean-Pierre Drouet. Michael Ranta is an American percussionist and composer who was a member of the live electronic free improv group Wired along with krautrock legend Conny Plank; he appeared on several landmark Gate 5 recordings performing on Harry Partch's unique microtonal instruments, collaborated with Fluxus composers Toshi Ichiyanagi and Takehisa Kosugi, created early electronic music at the NHK Tokyo studios (alongside Yuji Takahashi, Yori-Aki Matsudaira, Minao Shibata, Toshiro Mayuzumi, and Makoto Moroi), worked with Joseph Anton Riedl, Mauricio Kagel, Helmut Lachenmann, Herbert Brun, Jean-Claude Eloy, and Karlheinz Stockhausen, and was influential to Nurse With Wound/NWW. German experimental composer Lachenmann was influenced by Luigi Nono and calls his orchestral noise music 'musique concrete instrumentale'. Lonquich studied electronic music with Herbert Eimert and composition with Bernd Alois Zimmermann. Ferneyhough studied under Lennox Berkeley, worked with Ton de Leeuw and Klaus Huber, and was influenced by Edgard Varese, Dieter Schnebel, Webern, Schoenberg, and Boulez. Falaro studied under Allan Kemmler. Ton De Kruyf studied under Wolfgang Fortner. Jo Van Den Booren studied with Kees van Baaren. Rienbert de Leeuw is a Dutch conductor, composer, keyboardist, and writer who studied under Jaap Spaanderman and Kees van Baaren, worked with Peter Schat, Jan van Vlijmen, Mischa Mengelberg, and Louis Andriessen, wrote extensively on Charles Ives, and is known for his piano interpretations of Erik Satie. Brons was a composer, keyboardist, and radio producer who studied with Cor Batenburg, Luctor Ponse, and Johan M. Vetter. Known as the father of the French avant garde, Messiaen worked with Pierre Schaeffer and Pierre Henry, and was an essential teacher of Pierre Boulez, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Luciano Berio, Francois Bayle, and Francois Bernard Mache (among many other 20th century luminaries).
