Description

Astute students of Gluck know that his "Tragic Opera in Five Acts" ARMIDE is unique amongst his operas--as it was the only Paris opera in which he used a libretto which had been set before plus the only Paris opera in which he retained the usual five-act form of the French 'tragédie lyrique.' It is based upon Torquato Tasso's epic poem 'La Gerusalemme liberata' (and, as a side note...I hope too that these same astute operaphiles are familiar with Donizetti's fabulous opera TORQUATO TASSO). This recording features Felicity Palmer, Anthony Rolfe Johnson, Raimund Herincx, Linda Finnie, Adrian Thompson, Sally Burgess, & Marie Slorach with Richard Hickox conducting The City of London Sinfonia and The Richard Hickox Singers. This recording was made from four performances dated June 1, 3, 5, & 8, 1982 given on stage as part of the 6th annual Festival of Music at Christ Church Spitafields, London. Sung in French IN STEREO on 3 LPs on the EMI (HMV-Made in the UK) label--catalogue number SLS-1077513. The included booklet offers extensive historical info, synopsis, & libretto--all in French, English, & German. The LP surfaces are immaculately clean, visually scratch-free, & play superbly. I use rigid cardboard LP mailers to protect these fabulous treasures whilst in transit from my place to yours.
