ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This handsome and famous LP from Columbia Masterworks (ML 5060, US pressing, 2-eye gray label, mono) features Glenn Gould's landmark recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations BWV 988, taped at Columbia 30th Street Studios, New York City, during 10-16 June 1955.
It has now been 55 years since this album was first released and though it sold in great numbers, one wonders how many copies – in excellent condition – are still in existence.
In his brilliant little book The Life and Death of Classial Music , the wonderful writer and novelist Norman Lebrecht listed it among his "100 Milestones of the Recorded Century", writing: "The Goldberg appeared on Masterworks on 3 January 1956, priced $3.98, with a cover comprising thirty action photographs of Gould, one for each variation. The LP was an instant icon, its spine number – ML 5060 – acquiring mythic resonance. It was the top-selling classical record of 1956, clearing 40,000 opies, and it pumped Gould's reputation so high and wide that Khrushchev asked to hear him in Moscow and Karajan booked him for Salzburg and Berlin...No one on record had ever treated a piano, or a piece of music, in any comparable way. Gould burst onto the scene like a fiery angel, a comet from another constellation."
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is discoloration along the edges, as well as a bit to the rear panel, and slight evidence of shelfwear. However, there are no seamsplits, bends, or owners' markings, and the jacket remains extremely solid, bright, glossy, and attractive – overall, a fine collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Visually, there is a small bit of writing ("22", indicating the side timing) to the label of Side 2. In terms of sound, although the surfaces are not CD silent, the playback in general is quite superb. If you must have a MINT or near-MINT copy, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this is an excellent collector's copy.
