Description

This is the original 1967 UK Warner Brothers mono press, with the gold WB labels with the 'Miglewood..' label text error, with the earliest 1-A 1-B matrices and i-1 C-1 stampers.

The Grateful Dead had formed in 1965 as the Warlocks in San Francisco, California, but changed their name to the Grateful Dead in 1966 and played at various underground gigs in the bay area. Teaming up with Oswley Stanley the Acid king who rented them a house in Watts, L. A., bought them PA and in return they performed at his acid tests. The band secured a record contract with Warners at the begining of 1967 and went into the studio for four days to record an album. The record company edited down at least four of the tracks and it was released on the 17th March in the US. The mono pressings were dropped after 1969 and all later re-issues were in stereo, until 2003 when Rhino re-mastered the cut down stereo tracks in full with six out-takes added on CD and in 2011 the original mono/stereo masters were used by Rhino/RSD to re-issue a new vinyl versions of the original cut down track version of the album.

The Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd front laminated sleeve is intact & in EX condition, with some light corner/edge wear and some light laminate rubbing/creasing on the front cover, with some light discolouration and storage rubbing on the unlaminated rear, with two areas of felt tip marking on the track listing & a rubbed out name on the top corner. The spine is intact and fully readable, the Warner Bros company inner is intact, slightly discoloured/creased & in VG+ condition.
 
The record is in visually VG+ to EX condition, with only a few faint sleeve removal hairlines and a few small needle marks/scuffs visible on each side, but there are two small needle drop marks on side 1, tracks 2 & 4 that cause a couple of brief clicks on these two tracks. The labels are in EX condition, clean & bright with evidence of only one or two very faint spindle markings on each side.
 
The sound reproduction is EX, with no hiss, crackle or pops and definately no skips, sticks or jumps, but there is some brief, low background noise during the run in grooves and in a couple of the quieter passages.
Overall, just a really great listen, that plays loud & clear.
 
The matrix nos. are; W-1689, A-1 S stamper i-1, B-1 S stamper C-1, of the early first pressings of the original 1967 mono issue.
