Wake of the Flood è il sesto album realizzato in studio dai Grateful Dead. L'album è stato registrato tra il 4-15 Agosto del 1973, e originariamente rilasciato il 15 Ottobre del 1973. Segna la prima uscita sotto l'etichetta della band, Grateful Dead Records, dopo aver soddisfatto il loro contratto di nove dischi con la Warner Bros. Records.E' stato il loro primo album in studio full-length in quasi tre anni, a partire da American Beauty del 1970. E' stato anche il primo album in studio senza Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, che era morto da poco. La sua assenza e le inclinazioni del nuovo pianista Keith Godchaux per il bebop e il jazz modale (piuttosto che per le tendenze di McKernan verso il blues e la soul music) hanno contribuito alla evoluzione musicale della band. Anche la moglie di Godchaux, Donna Godchaux, fa un'apparizione come corista nell'album.

Wake of the Flood is the sixth Grateful Dead studio album. It was recorded between August 4–15, 1973, and originally released on October 15, 1973. It was the first release under the band's own label, Grateful Dead Records, after fulfilling their nine-disc contract with Warner Bros. Records. It was their first full-length studio album in nearly three years, since 1970's American Beauty. It was also the first studio album without Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, who had recently died. His absence and new piano player Keith Godchaux's penchants for bebop and modal jazz (rather than McKernan's tendencies toward the blues and soul music) contributed to the band's musical evolution. Godchaux's wife, Donna Godchaux, also makes an appearance as a backing vocalist on the album.
         

I Grateful Dead sono stati un gruppo musicale Rock statunitense attivo dal 1965 al 1995. Furono tra gli artisti chiave della cosiddetta Summer of Love.Nati alla metà degli anni sessanta,e precisamente nel 1965, furono fra gli artisti fondamentali della storia di quello che veniva allora chiamato acid rock o rock psichedelico. Divennero celebri per il loro stile eclettico, che univa elementi di rock, folk, bluegrass, blues, country e jazz. Le loro interpretazioni Live erano caratterizzate da interminabili e lisergiche improvvisazioni modali. Attorno ai Grateful Dead nacque una sorta di culto; alcuni loro fan, chiamati Deadhead, seguirono il gruppo in concerto per anni, vivendo di fatto come nomadi in onore della loro devozione verso "the Dead".Raggiunsero la fama verso la fine degli anni 60', per poi arrivare all'apice del successo con album come Live/Dead, Workingman's Dead e American Beauty. La rivista Rolling Stone li inserisce al cinquantasettesimo posto nella lista dei 100 grandi artisti.
