Here is an Original Double Record LP Test Pressing of "Grease" the Original 1978 Motion Picture Soundtrack. The LP Discs are in Excellent to Near Mint Condition. Each Disc has the Generic White Columbia Record Production "Santa Maria" Test Pressing Record Label. As you can see, the Records are in TWO Separate, Generic White Covers with the "Grease - Record 1 & Record 2" Labeled with a Green Felt Marker and the Catalog Number in Black. Record 1 is also labeled as an "Advance Copy."

A test pressing is usually a white label vinyl record with the contents printed or hand written on the label. After manufacturing an acetate a small number of vinyl test pressings are produced to check sound quality. They usually bear only plain white labels, sometimes handwritten labels or prints like ‘advance only’. Usually they have no catalog numbers and can be identified only by the matrix no. Even rarer than white label or promo issues, these are the first copies of a recording manufactured at the pressing plant, and are generally produced in very small quantities to test the mastering levels, quality of materials, as the name implies. Never meant for general circulation, they are quite rare and, as a result, can be very valuable--depending on the title.

A stamper is used to "press" the vinyl. For a regular LP, one can press approximately 1000 records per set of stampers before we start to lose sound quality. Pressing vinyl records over and over again is hard on metal stampers. The pressing of a record is marked by an identification number and letter combination often found on the back cover and on the record label itself. For even more precise information about the pressing, look to the numbers etched into the record's inner groove or run-off groove area of a record around the center ring on the playing side of the disc.

The album gives credit to the two stars of the film; John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, although they only appear on seven of the 24 tracks. The remainder of the album is sung by various cast members and Sha Na Na - a group who performed many of the 1950s numbers in the film. The title track was recorded by Frankie Valli, who had no other connection with the film. The most successful songs from the soundtrack were written specifically for the film. They included the Billboard number-one hits "You're the One That I Want", "Grease" and the number-three, Academy Award-nominated "Hopelessly Devoted to You
