This album consists of numbers that are the favorite hymns, anthems, spirituals, and gos- pel songs of the Florida Street choir and congregation. The Florida Street choir is composed of dedicated Christian men and women who love and worship God through music and who endeavor to lead their congrega- tion to a worshipful experience each week by using a wide variety of hymns, hymn- anthems, anthems, and gospel music. Singing is a natural outpouring of a Chris- tian's heart, and singing also has a great power to communicate with people's hearts. The choir endeavors to witness for Christ by singing the gospel message when lost people are present. The choir endeavors to worship by singing great hymns addressing God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. The choir endeavors to learn by singing hymns presenting scripture or doctrinal truths. The choir endeavors to live by singing hymns of consecration and service with real meaning and assurance when living is hard. The choir endeavors to be a spiritual force in the church. The purpose of their singing and of this record album is not to glorify the choir, but to direct the message of God to people through music. It is the prayer of the choir that the music from this album will find its way into the heart of everyone that listens, that they might witness, worship, learn and live more for our Lord. HISTORY Fifty-four years ago 25 Christian men and women joined together in fellowship to form the Florida Street Baptist Church. In 1921 the name was changed to Glenwood Baptist Church. In 1930 the name was changed again to Florida Street Baptist Church and the brick building that was demolished in 1968 was built. In 1936 the church was 20 years old and had a membership of over 350. By 1944 the church property was valued at $26,500, and by 1946 740 names were on the roll. An educational building was completed in 1949, and a parking lot in 1953. In 1954 the church started having two Worship Services each Sunday. JACK WILDER Pastor Wilder was born in 1923, in Wake County, North Carolina. He was educated in the Durham County Public School System, graduating from Campbell College, Wake Forest College and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Mr. Wilder held pastorates in North Carolina and Texas while receiving his theological training. Since graduat- ing from the seminary he has been pastor of Harris Chapel Baptist Church of Youngsville, North Carolina and Holloway Street Baptist Church of Durham, North Carolina. BETTY MYATT, BILL SLACK, DONNA MILLER Favorites Betty Myatt and Donna Miller have served the church well as pianist and organist. Betty Myatt has been organist or pianist for over 20 years and Donna Miller has been organist for over 8 years. Bill Slack, a layman, employed by Blue Bell, Inc. of Greensboro, serves the church as Minister of Music. Through his leadership the choir has been blessed in a great way and is striving for a greater Christian witness through music. From meager beginnings Florida Street had grown to over I 100 members by 1956, and in December 1958 the present sanctuary was completed. In I960 Rev. Jack Wilder came as pastor. During his ministry the church has had its greatest hours. A new educational building was completed in 1969. A program that was started in 1965 has contributed greatly to the growth during the past four years. This program of witnessing laymen has seen many lost people make decisions for Christ, and because of this program a great and glorious future is in store for Florida Street as she goes forward and onward for our Lord. Mr. Wilder has served as a member of the Executive Committee of the Meredith College Board of Trustees, Past President of the Durham Baptist Pastors' Confer- ence, and has served on various Baptist State Conven- tion Committees, as well as on Committees of the Piedmont Baptist Association in Greensboro for which he is a past Moderator. He is now a Trustee of Camp- bell College, Buie's Creek, North Carolina, and is Vice-President of the North Carolina Baptist Pastors' Conference. BILL KIRKPATRICK No Revival or Crusade would be complete at Florida Street without Bill Kirkpatrick. Bill, a favorite of all our members, thrills and inspires us with his wonderful gos- pel songs. A resident of Graham, North Carolina, Bill is a regular on WFMY-TV and several local and nearby radio stations. An honorary member of the Florida Street Choir, the choir greatly appreciates Bill singing their favorite "Balm In Gilead".
