Grouper - He Knows, He Knows, He Knows (Yellow Electric) GR 003 - 7" vinyl version from 2009

Originally released as a limited Collective Jyrk CD-R in 2006, He Knows He Knows He Knows arrived in between Grouper's breakthrough album release, Way Their Crept and its full-length follow-up, Wide. Now re-released on a strictly limited self made vinyl pressing, this three-track EP revisits Liz Harris' in one of her most mesmerising appearances. The first song (titled 'He Knows') takes a miasmic swirl of Harris' vocals and punctuates the serenity with surges of delay feedback, almost resembling the kind of saturation effects you might hear in dub production. It's as if a barely suppressed malevolent energy is constantly trying to break through that wall of Arvo Part-like choral piety. B1 (also titled 'He Knows') might be the finest of the three entries here, probably most closely resembling the more evolved dynamics of her present day output. The tape loop reflections of Harris' voice sound oddly like ripples on a pond, while muggy guitar twangs impose the sort of structured melodies that would come to inform later Grouper releases like Cover The Windows And The Walls. Finally, on B2 (that's right, it's called 'He Knows') Harris launches into a more tightly structured, looped and layered piece reinstating the sort of pseudo-ecclesiastical purity that was sabotaged back on the A-side. As with the original CD-R, this vinyl version arrives in another strictly limited run, you know exactly what you need to do...
