ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This superb and extremely rare LP from Boston Records (B202, US pressing, black/silver label, mono – no stereo edition exists) features the great Arthur Grumiaux in 4 remarkable performances, in most cases his earliest recordings of these works, set down in Boston in January 1953. Apart from Bach’s Chaconne, Grumiaux is accompanied throughout by pianist Gregory Tucker. This is truly exalted playing by any measure and all those who treasure the art of the violin will find much to admire here, Grumiaux already displaying the beautiful tone, impeccable finish, and probing musicianship that marked his long association with Philips.
The Chaconne, in particular, is simply magnificent and is projected with much greater power and grandeux than in Grumiaux’s later Philips account. It is an epic reading.

Incidentally, the striking cover art is credited to Baskin, while the fine liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket, in English only, were written by Rudolf Elie.
CONDITION – PLEASE READ VERY CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is FAIR (Note: This is at the lower end of my grading scale). Both the lower edge and the spine have been tape repaired. There is significant edgewear, a bend to the lower-left corner, a sticker tear to the upper-right corner, a fair amount of discoloration, and a former owner’s sticker to the rear panel. On the plus side, there are no open seamsplits and the jacket remains solid and presentation worthy – not a collector’s copy, but still a passable one.
The condition of the LP itself is VERY GOOD. Visually, the surfaces are still fairly glossy, though there are (mostly non-sounding) marks to the vinyl and another discreet owner’s sticker to one label. In terms of sound, this is not unlike a Remington LP pressing. The surfaces are not CD silent, and there are some scatterd tics, but in general the playback is quite fine. In fact, the engineering is superb, with Grumiaux’s violin having an almost tangible presence. However, those requiring a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as a very good collector’s copy.
