Description
Where to start? The original album was recorded in 1973 for the Holyground label, 160 copies were pressed but never given a proper release. The band’s name famously came from an incident when a cloth-eared record label exec told them to ‘Get Your Gear And Fuck Off’. The music is light folky progressive with guitar, keyboard and flute (I’ve seen comparisons with Strawbs, Cressida and Spring) – with better luck they might have made it.
According to the Holyground guys, Mike Levon and Dave Wood, the actual 1973 pressings were given a cover and released in 1989 as part of the Holyground/Magic Mixture reissue programme. There was also talk of a further reissue, but this copy has all the characteristics of one of the original 1973 pressing of 160 and was sold to me by Hugo at the Magic Mixture shop in 1989, so I have to believe it’s the real thing.
The whole package – thin fold-out cover signed by Levon and Wood, inserts and vinyl – is in excellent condition. I was a bit concerned by what look like watermarks on side 2 of the LP but research indicates that they were all like this and it doesn’t affect the sound.
I will include the horrible sticky plastic cover that it was sold in but I keep it in a polythene sleeve.
If you look online you may find a dealer’s site that I’ve seen saying that they sold a copy in 2015 for £700. If that’s true, this is a ridiculous bargain!
