Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 130 grams. A very good solid weight.

Rarity: Very Scarce: UK pressings of these slightly lesser-known US psych bands are never easy to find with minimal sales here at the time. Not only that, it appears very little played and sounds great, this album was no issued in mono. Lastly, UK versions included a VERY flimsy gatefold cover, made with card no thicker than paper, these more often seen badly damaged, torn, even trashed. This one impressive with little more to fault than corner rubs (left) and a small few bottom edge chips. Both beyond difficult to avoid at very best, this one will still take some beating.

Brief Info: The second H. P. Lovecraft album, and final one by this American psychedelic rock band, their name borrowed from the 19th horror novelist. A live set was issued many years later and is also worth checking out. I rate both their albums highly, this one even more psychedelic and a little more out-there than the debut with quite eerie overtones. Both are elusive as UK pressings and selling in only tiny numbers, the albums fairly quickly went out-of-print. As so often, over time, their albums have gained a lot more interest, this one especially. Certainly they will appeal to fans of the more acid-psych era of Jefferson Airplane with a not dissimilar sound. My first copy of this one for a long time, and I doubt if I will ever find one much better, the cover is really lovely and quite strong for such a delicate piece. The record exceptional and totally defying its considerable age, it looks and plays beautifully and could indeed prove a major upgrade for existing owners. Strongly recommended, do not lose this one.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or very close to. I think this more than justified for a cover that will rarely be found even half this fine. An ultra thin and flimsy gatefold format with front and back laminate. The card little thicker than paper which will in most cases cause laminate issues. The inside is matt and smooth finish. Printed and made in England.

Lamination – Front & Back: Firstly, this cover must be held carefully in two hands or it will badly bend. The laminate retains superb shine, freshness and clarity with little to fault on the front bar left corner rubs and tiny bottom edge chips. To reitterate how thin this card is, both front and back are doube thickness, but still incredibly soft and ‘bendy’. The back has a couple of spine edge lifts, both fairly small, one natural the other from a fine surface crease near the top left corner. It also has the the same rub areas as the front. Any lifts on the front are minuscule and try to even see them. There is no peeling and incredibly, hardly any other creases and any surface marks tiny, very few and faint. Incredibly deep vibrant colour, and both sides look very impressive. With such delicate construction and card, this will take a lot of beating.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Barely any wear at all, just a little set-off where the deeply coloured right rests upon the black and white left, that nigh-on impossible to avoid unless ‘barrier’ card or paper is put inside, and how many would have ever thought to have done so?

Top Edges: Both impressive for wafer-thin edges: the odd microscopic chip, but nothing else up to the tips that have rubbed, but only small on the right pair. No splits and even still straight.

Bottom Edges: Small patchy rubbing the proper end folds. The end panel card has light thickening and a light burring/chipping on the front. I can hardly seen how this can be avoided on these storage edges. Again no splits. Given the facts, I consider these most perilous of edges in very fine condition.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a real edge e.g. no trimmed in manufacture, this is solid (as it can be) and with little wear at all. The back entrance edges are clean, and both mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring little and light as seen viewed end-on where you can really see how thin this card is. Both are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way, just super-fine chip or rub traces on the back.

Spine and Text: Firstly, the ends have both rubbed – the top moderate – the bottom, moderate+ as seen more on the back. But the main spine area is superb. Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate. Yes, all the laminate up to the rubbed ends fully present with no cracking or peeling. Even the fold hinges unworn (except the end areas), the bottom a little weakened and maybe just the hint or beginnings of a small split. Again I state, so few will not have the odd tiny issue like this, most will have major issues, of that, I have no doubts whatsoever.

Corners: Moderate and moderate+ rubbing on the fragile spine pair, only quite small rubs on the right ones. Fair to fine shape retained and maybe being a little harsh.

Cover Summary: The corner rubbing apart, this is a very fine all-round example of this 46-year-old super-fragile cover. Just look at the pictures, it will take an extraordinary one to better it. As I have said before, when the rare delicate covers come along, a little give-and-take sometimes has to be allowed for, of these classics would simply never be seen at all. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(–): only marked down for age darkening. This vintage Polydor polylined inner has two crisp window circles and the lining clear. Impression round the record shape/minor creasing with all edges unsplit with no repairs. This one date-coded 079 (July 1969).

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): or better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. There is a ‘heat’ or ‘water’ mark in the pressing on the edge of side two, but it has NO sound – I think this album is known to have it and most will probably be the same. The good news reitterated, it does not sound. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This wonderful eerie psych-rock album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a solid dynamic range and detailed sound. It has a production quite similar to the early Jefferson Airplane albums that more reading this will probably be more familiar with. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. A little surprisingly, this album was not issued in mono, hence many copies were played on heavy tracking mono record players, and will all know what that can mean. So with both channels still being clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, and clearly not subjected to any blunt stylus abuse. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. Something of a ‘lost’ obscurity outside the United States, which is a shame, H. P. Lovecraft were a wonderful band and both albums I consider essential. Weighing up age and considerable delicateness, this copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
