"BELFAST INSERT #2"
A very scarce 6-inch 45 rpm acetate recording made by Guthrie in a coin-operated recording booth in London, England, in January 1972.
Hammond Guthrie, a veteran of the Beat poetry scene in the UK, was very lucky indeed to have as one of his biggest fans back in the 1970s, one of his own legendary heroes, William S. Burroughs. It was William Burroughs who took it upon himself to send Guthrie's manuscript of his book, "Belfast Insert," to Burroughs' publisher in Germany to ask them to publish it.
Offered here is a 6-inch recording of a section of Belfast Insert, read by Guthrie - Guthrie decribes the recording in his 2005 autobiography: "These WorksUnderGround...were little 45 rpm jobs that I made in rustic coin-operated booths located in some of the older tube stations around London. For 50p I could record three-minute snippets of my work against the muffled sound of London's Underground whoosh-clanging and swoosh-buckling away behind me."
This "Belfast Insert #2" recording was made by Guthrie in the Waterloo Station in London in January 1972. The label states "Calibre Auto Recording. 45 rpm. Made in England" and there is a white sticker on which Guthrie wrote: "Belfast Insert #2 / Waterloo Station/ 1/72 Hammond Guthrie"
This record has has been played and there are a few light scratches on it.
