My Sunday bonus item this week is a rare slice of country music history - It is an ORIGINAL 1947 STERLING LABEL HANK WILLIAMS 78 RPM RECORD containing the songs 'Honky Tonkin''/'Pan American' from legendary country music pioneer Hank Williams. It is Sterling Records catalog number 210, the fourth of the four earliest 78 RPM singles released by Hank on Sterling before he signed with MGM Records and became country music's first superstar. The value in this particular record is in its rarity and great historic significance, as its condition is unfortunately not the best - Overall condition is no better than poor to G -- - This record has a large amount of surface scratches and scuffs, some of which can be felt, and little original gloss. The 'Pan American' side of the record also has a couple of chips at its outer edge, one of which goes into the play surface for a few revolutions as can be seen in the accompanying image I have included. There is also some flaking around the A-side center hole and some wear around the B-side center hole as can be seen in the accompanying images. On the positive side, record has no cracks, either surface or sub-surface. Hank Williams' Sterling 78s are the country music equivalent of Elvis Presley's Sun Records releases - They represent the genesis of a legendary superstar artist at the very beginning of his career, and are rare and historic items that would be cornerstone items and great conversation pieces in any country or American popular music record collection!
