Description

Harcourt Whyte Choir LP Wilfilms Records WRLP 1006 1979
i found this rare LP without its sleeve. On William Onyeabor's Wilfilms Records. There is little documentation of it online.
From the date, this was released on Onyeabor's label just before Body & Soul. Onyeabor only released a handful of artists on the label other than his own solo records.
Some words on Harcourt Whyte, from liner notes on a CD of his works: "In over 200 songs and anthems, Ikoli Harcourt-Whyte (1905-1977) proved himself a master in the art of integrating European-influenced harmonic structure with powerful African rhythms. Half his life was characterized by an upheaval struggle with a debilitating illness and a tenacious reliance on an all-benevolent God - emotions that were aptly reflected in the deep philosophies expounded by his lyrics. Harcourt-Whyte’s life has become a beacon to many people of struggle. He wrote in Igbo, a Nigerian language that presents more than its share of difficulty, but which also, like South Africa’s Zulu, portends the percussive elements that naturally dictate the intoxicating rhythms characteristic to many African choral music."
A certainly rare piece for any collector of Onyeabor, Nigerian traditional music, and beautiful vocal music in general.
Considering it was found without a proper sleeve, this LP is in great shape. No major scuffs, scratches or dirt. I have provided a pic of the only significant marks on the LP.
