Label Conditions: Very clean with incredible deep orange colour. Spindle marks on side one are less than moderate and side two only light. These have only modest visibility with normal viewing.

Cat Number: WS 1852.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 155 grams. Above average, but not untypical for these early orange Warner records.

Rarity: Quite rare: hardly a major seller or big name, but a very fine band and listen nonetheless.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Hard Meat were formed in Cornwall in the late sixties by the Birmingham born Dolan brothers, Mick on guitars and vocals and Steve on bass and vocals, together with drummer Mick Carless. Before forming the band, they took on a summer residency as the Ebony Combo at Bude’s Headland Pavilion. Changing their name to Hard Meat and adopting a somewhat harder style with a progressive edge. They were signed to Warner Brothers Records and released two records, Hard Meat, this their debut and one other called Through a Window both issued in 1970 – both very difficult extinct to find. This album is very good entertainment and it even features a brilliant rendition of Dylan’s ‘Most Likely You Go Your Way I’ll Go Mine’. A short-lived band, Steve Dolan later went on to feature with Pete Sinfield in 1973 and brother Mick featured with vocalist-guitarist John Coppin in 1979. This is only the second one of these I have ever seen or had, the last one around six years ago. Checking out my Ebay archives file, that was not a particularly clean pressing with manufacture splash blisters on the playing surfaces, but this example has no such problems and offers high quality clean sound. How many times this one was repressed I would imagine would be very few indeed and this is a typical very heavy first Warner orange label pressing. The silver cover, again never easy but this has only relatively modest wear and given it’s format, in fine overall condition. Certainly an unusual one and not a big name in rock. One more point: the price guides suggest this came with a photo insert, well I have never seen one and checking a few old Net listings, it appears no-one else has either. So if it does exist, it must me mighty rare.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(-): a highly respectable and arguably harsh grading for a silver ink cover that never wear well. An unlaminated gatefold format. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse with the ‘Patents Pending’ text near the imprint. Silver-grey type covers are ruthless for showing marks and blemishes and with a 155 gram record inside, it has little chance of avoiding some wear.

Cover Front: Some corner creasing and mild surface rubs, but far less than most of these types will show. Still clean and quite attractive, a few very fine surface marks can be seen under light but the lack of ring marks is always a bonus.

Cover Back: Very similar in most-all respect with just slight ring arc rubbing near the top and bottom edges, any elsewhere is very faint indeed. I consider this very light indeed as many silver-grey ink covers have full circle ringwear and often very deeply penetrating. This has avoided that which is a huge bonus. Again any rubbing is very light and both front and back will prove hard to find much better with an original, first pressed orange label copy inside.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Not much to fault here, a very slight pressmark on the left side but it hardly even registers.

Top Edges: Light to moderate patchy rubbing.

Bottom Edges: Moderate or slightly more which is consistent on both. Being the resting edges and that colour, these will rub in most instances.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Quite clean and sharp with very little wear, any present near the corner ends. Record entered on the back edge.

Spine and Text: Incredibly, the spine has survived almost devoid of wear bar the very top and bottom. Solid, straight, uncompressed and square, both right edges meeting up near perfectly and parallel. ALL text is present and unworn and that is almost remarkable, most-all of the unforgiving ink is there with any rubs or chips veryk small and few.

Corners: All corners have rubbed in relatation to their respective edge, but the actuall spine ends are only lightly affected. Fine shape is large retained but with some creasing to some.

Cover Summary: These type of covers are difficult, make no mistake about it. This one is hard just to find and this example is more than highly respectable. My grading as to be taken in context, as few will avoid often major wear. Silver-grey covers over 40 years old, well you will find many worse ones I guarantee. This highly respectble and scarce item should please many collectors but the perfectionists will have to wait for what could be a long time.

The Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD(++): little real wear as such, but it has aged with some moderate darkening and glue browning on the fully intact seams. This is polylined with two very neat, crisp window circles and clear, intact lining. Some reasonably modest creasing and including the original UK patent number and ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: at least, arguably better still. Very clean with fine shine, jet black and a heavy pressing which is a very first. Any surface marks are tiny, few and faint and it appears only modestly played. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This heavyweight first-pressed record plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a good dynamic range and detailed sound. This example has no pressing issues and any surface sounds are minimal and faint and no significant pops or clicks were noted. All focused and clear, this ultimate first issue offers highly enjoyable audio quality. This copy will indeed prove difficult to find better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
