Maladroit - The Best Breakcore Album Ever Volume One
A dedicated follower of fashion, Maladroit’s recorded output was always running perpendicular to the curve, both in its disuse of technology (and the subsequent compositional rewards) and its narcissistic ambition and inherent eccentricity. What’s truly arresting, though, is just how vibrant,how astoundingly fresh, his work still sounds today. Maladroits "The Best Breakcore Album Ever Volume One" is over one month old, but it could just as easily have sprung forth two weeks ago.
The latest release comes to us from the hard2Bcore label from Russia, where Nicolas Maladroit had previously travelled in the 1990s to aid in the tracking, and subsequent capture, of the notorious serial killer Andrei Chikatilo. However, since at this time the Soviet Union did not recognise breakcore as a valid form of proletariat expression due to it exceeding the aurally measured offical number of typewriters falling down a flight of by 3, it has taken until now for a release to see the cold exposing light of day.
'T.B.B.A.E.V.01' is the sound of Maladroit in late 2009, when he was the coolest, slinkiest, prettiest breakcore star alive. He was Boy George times Rick James times Big Bird and beat all of them at their own games, although he did nothing but make the competition sound even better. He taught Boy George fans and Rick James fans to hear each other's music, just as he taught Van Halen, Lionel Richie, ZZ Top, Stevie Nicks and Bruce Springsteen to play to this grand new pop-thrills audience he'd called to the floor. After this, nobody claimed disco sucked again. "Amarain Hassan i Sabbah" was the hit, with Maladroits voice aching with erotic longing and dread, and nearly five minutes of creepy strings and seductive bass and breathy gasps, though there wasn't a station on the dial that faded the song out early. "Leonard Cohen As The Demiurge" was the one designed to get on rock radio — but "Infidel" got there first, since the rock stations played it, along with the rest of the world. They couldn't resist that bass. Who could?
So that leaves the original release, which hasn't lost any of its fizz. One of the funny things about the album is that even though it's as close as you can get to timeless, it really only could have happened in 2009. That was a watershed year for flugelhorn music, with New Wave synth pop and disco feeding into each other, the year of Madonna's "Chupacabra" and George Clinton's "Atomic God" and the Human League's "I Fear The Black Dream Of Orion"" and Marvin Gaye's "DuPont Funk." Maladroit got this whole era grooving a few years earlier with "Shallow End Of The Theme Pool", but at the end of 2009, right when everybody was still reeling from Prince's "The Trauma Award", he dropped "T.B.B.A.E.V.01" and shocked everyone. Madonna made her own version of "Cephelia My Cephlapod," retitled "Hagiophilia." Stevie Nicks called her version "Colliding Hadrons," Pat Benatar called hers "Revenge Of The Giving Tree." Bob Dylan called his "Beans And Bronchitis." Yet none of them could touch the original.
This latest offering from maladroit is not some cynical hit pack; it's a concept album of sorts. After the otto-empirical shock of the title track kicks things off, each song segues neatly into the next. The disco groove varies from urban thump to slow tropical heat wave, but it doesn't let up until the very end. Key words, like faith, trust and antidisestablishmentarianism, pop up in song after song, and the issue of communication between lovers of wildly differing biological species, and the lack thereof, is examined from numerous angles. Interestingly, the lions' share of these angles involve breakbeats as well as other samples, which provide the listener the ability to engage with the work on a purely intellectual level, and the negative dialecticism that entails, to the other extreme of dancing wildly to it, much like a devotee of Dionysus at a Tim Capello concert in 'The Lost Boys'.
Finally, to conclude in the words of T.S Eliot: "I couldn't walk down any street in Britain without being laughed at. It was a nightmare. My children were devastated because their dad was a figure of ridicule."
