Description
This is an exceptionally rare and unique format of Harry Belafonte’s legendary 1956 album “Calypso” presented as a double 45-RPM LP set. Releases like this are highly unusual in the vinyl world since full-length albums were almost never issued as multi-disc 45 RPM editions. That makes this set a standout collector piece and a conversation item even among seasoned vinyl collectors.
Musically, “Calypso” is one of the most influential Caribbean folk albums ever recorded. It introduced American audiences to a new sound built on Trinidadian rhythms, call-and-response vocals, and Harry Belafonte’s unmatched charisma. The album includes some of the most iconic tracks in pop culture history such as Day-O (The Banana Boat Song) and Jamaica Farewell, both of which helped the album become the first LP in history to sell over one million copies in the United States.
Personnel on this release include Tony Scott & His Orchestra and guitarist Millard Thomas, both highly respected contributors to the early folk and world-music movements.
