Description

HARRY JAMES & His Orchestra with Helen Forrest. COCA COLA SPOTLIGHT BANDS 12" 33-1/3 transcription May 1942. Labeled "A Red, White and Blue Program, Compliments of the Coca-Cola Company, Presenting Harry James as Spotlight Champion of Champions."  Pressed on vinyl for distribution to soldiers overseas and in camps. These pre-AFRS shows contain an entire half-hour program, with commercials, on one disc. In order to squeeze that much music onto a pre-microgroove disc, the low bass frequencies were attenuated, producing a tinny, but clear, sound. The heavy tonearms of the era wreaked havoc on these tight and delicate grooves, so most copies of these early wartime discs are very worn, as is this one, which looks as if it had gone through a minor battle on its own. Despite that and a few skipped grooves early on the first side, the whole show plays through quite well.  V condition.
