Donny Hathaway was first recorded Live in 1972, over four shows at The Troubadour in Hollywood and The Bitter End in Manhattan in 1971. He'd rework studio material in real live time, stretching 'The Ghetto' into a communal engine, slowing Roxy Music target 'Jealous Guy' to confessional speeds, and spreading 'What's Going On' far further than its original six-minute Wurlitzer whirl would dare venture. This was early in his career, between his debut and later ill mental health. The record has endured for its unflinchingly unfinished live sound, unfinished in the best sense, since Hathaway's approach was to treat songs like turnpikes and switchbacks, leaving songs somewhat uncommitted despite having already made vinyl records out of them. This Rhino Reserve reissue resurrects the moment, working from the original analogue stereos.
