Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and highly attractive with very light, few and faint spindle marks that show little.

Weight of this Record: 110 grams. This a little below average. UA record pressing weight varied considerable. For instance, Zappa’s ‘200 Motels’ is most often a lighter pressing of anything between 105 to 120 grams. But I once had a copy of this that hit the scales at a massive 171 grams reitterating how this company varied it’s use of vinyl.

Rarity: Scarce: copies this clean are not easy to find complete and in this type of condition. This includes the Log Book and (unusually) a very strong cover and hardly played record. These type of albums were rarely purchased by hi-fi connoisseurs and often were borrowed and played into submission (often under the influence of ‘substances’). The intricate cover is very rarely found even a genuine EX and this one is even better than that. The record plays very well with just a brief few ticks at the very start of the near silent intro of side one – a trait that seems all so common on this album.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Another gem from a very clean collection I am currently offering. After the brilliant psych-rock of the debut album, this was now a major shift to acid, progressive space-rock and few bands did it better than early Hawkwind. Raw and hypnotic, this is a real mind-bending album. Repetitive power-riffs with swirling synths and Nik Turner’s eerie wailing treated electric sax and flute, Hawkwind took their sound into a new dimension and thrilled stoned audiences wherever they performed. The line-up (or crew as the cover states) on this trip-fest were: Nik Turner - alto sax, flute, audio generator, vocals; Dave Brock - vocals, electric guitar, acoustic 6 and 12 string, audio generator; Dave Anderson - bass, guitars; Del Dettmar - Synthesiser; Terry Ollis - drums; Dik Mik - Audio generator. The famous Stacia danced, and sometimes as nature intended to spaced-out audiences - she features on the back cover being deliberately slightly shot out-of-focus. I obscured the crucial area to be safe on my picture, but the log book hide NOTHING in the way of damage or wear and this fragile cover will be one of the best you will see. Spectacular live, loud, controversial and totally on a different planet, this was real acid rock and how these guys survived those heady days to still be performing today is quite amazing. The documentary on BBC 4 a while ago was a revelation and a major insight into the history of this amazing band. In Search of Space starts with the sixteen minute epic ‘You Shouldn’t Do That’, a typically thumping riff-driven Hawks classic with a fine mix of dreamy spaceadelia with psych mixed in too. A brilliant (but delicate) packaged album with a double front opening gatefold with internal down opening inner flap, fragile enough in-itself, but made even more so by a recess and tab and both opening front ‘gates’ have zig-zag edges which almost always bend and fray, very few will be found devoid of creasing, burring, splits or tears. Often the victim of storage inside protective inners that catch these vulnerable parts when put inside. Included also is the Hawkwind Log Book - a delicate 24-page ‘surreal flight manual’ that only came with early issues of this record – both are in superb conditions. The book often seen falling apart or badly torn. The record is very clean indeed but emits a few brief tick near the start which seems all so common on this record. Logic tells me, many buyers from the past being unfamiliar with the content, placed the stylus to hear nothing. The beginning is silence and builds up very slowly to sound, so the user could have been misled into thinking they had missed the record and quickly readjusted unneccessarily. Little else to really fault and one to enjoy very close to it’s very best, it must be played loud!! Most prog collectors will know the conditions this set is normally found in, and this is exceptional by anyone’s standard, the cover especially so, I have tried to show how neat and undamaged the delicate parts are – the close-up hopefully shows how neat and unworn the tab and recess lug is on the front cover, they are seldom found so clean and devoid of use. Most Hawkwind fans will enjoy this one and I consider this a rare opportunity to own one this fine.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear & Damage: Very High+. The delicate cut-out shaped parts are incredibly fragile and vulnerable to major damage. The back massively prone to rubbing and ringwear.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++) (arguably better still considering just how vulnerable this one is). It’s a multi-opening gatefold format, unlaminated with all matt surfaces. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group. Includes the Log Book and UA coloured inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Both the zig-zag shaped opening flaps are in very clean and sharp conditions with barely any rubbing to the vulnerable black ink. Both retain an unusual freshness with hardly any marks at all to the supremely fresh and attractive artwork. A couple of tiny indentations to the top zig-zags but little else, the lack of creasing or thickening to the spike ends is beyond difficult to find and these are as clean and crisp as you will find. All retain full ink retention and there is NO tip-ins, what a difference this detail makes to the appearance of this complex cover. The only fine surface crease on this superb front is near the left edge towards the bottom. The recess for the lug tab (right) is pristine perfect and without doubt is up there with the least ‘used’ I have yet seen. The tab (left) that slots into the recess is also very neat and mostly very crisp. Just very faint rub traces to the very edge of the bottom area, this being quite critical. Given that most are frayed, softened and tatty, again this has great shape and it’s definition has avoided any noteworthy edge burring or scuffs, amazingly, this is uncreased too, which is almost remarkable. Proving beyond any doubt, this tab and recess have barely ever been used. The actual score fold has clearly hardly ever been bent in anger and this also retains all ink and artwork – this is highly unusual to say the least, this ‘hinge’ part often is weakened, torn or tatty, this remains largely sharp, clean and unstressed. How many of these are seen with tape or glue repairs?, none needed on this one. The actual zig-zags are the ultimate test for this cover: all the edges and points here are very sharp indeed, on the inside AND outside with no splits or tears, all points sharp with no fraying or feathering on any of them. The odd very fine semi-crease is almost unavoidable and just the one on the penultimate bottom right. The main edges are sharp and the hinge folds retaining full ink with no rubbing, again a huge bonus. One of rock’s most spectacular, fragile and delicate covers, seldom seen like this. The freshness and lack of damage on what is one of rock’s most delicate and unforgiving covers is very refreshing indeed, this is one to hold and enjoy, not hide away waiting for a better one to show up.

Cover Back: Probably just as well this infamous back cover was taken out of focus, I decided to cover it with the flight log anyway. Yes the famous Stacia is shown dancing as Hawkfans of the day will remember her. Lemmy described her on the TV documentary as ‘amazing’ – she used to apply herself in face ‘paint’ and stand their like an ancient leader or goddess. An amazing lady apparently, six feet tall with a 52 inch chest, she was an integral part of the band’s stage show at this time. This back cover again is exceptional showing none of the usual ringwear these types often do. Clean and devoid of creasing with no rubbing or ring wear at all. The only blemish of note is a small few and compacted press marks towards the top. The types of mark that zp on ‘Sticky Fingers’ used to leave is stored against a cover. These are quite light, small and have removed NO ink, hence they have modest visibility. An ultra fine and faint surface tip crease to the top right corner has registers but I will mention anything however minor I see. This really is a superb back cover and rarely seen this clean and fresh.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The first face on opening, being the colour band picture is superb again, any rub traces minimal and faint and crease-free. Both flaps are exceptional, I mentioned a couple of tiny burr traces near the top but those apart little else to fault. The back of the lug recess is amazing too with barely any traces of ink loss or rubbing, all reitterating just how little handling or ‘use’ this cover has had. These delicate areas are so difficult to find like this. Finding these spiked, shaped parts this clean with so little traces of burring and thickening is rare and unusual, but clearly, fantastic news for the more discerning collector.

Top Edges: Fragile beyond belief but all these edges show hardly any wear at all. Any thickening or burr traces are tiny and faint and almost as neat as they will ever be.

Bottom Edges: The single thickness fronts again show barely any wear or thickening and remain very sharp. The thick closed back almost entirely rub-free and this will rarely be the case. Incredibly neat with no crushing or compression worthy of note.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Exceptional, unrubbed and very straight. This area is a hinge for the right flap and both folds are totally unrubbed and as sold and strong as when made.

Spine and Text: Also in superb condition: solid, straight, any compression very slight and this is folded square so all the parts when closed all meet up very closely together for maximum good looks. In fact all edges are as close to parallel as possible and meeting up flush. A delicate spine that has barely any hint or rubbing and ALL the text is totally unworn and beautifully centred – they hardly get much better than this.

Corners: A small light tip crease to the top right back but that’s about it. The least wear and rubbing I have probably seen on this unforgiving cover. Excellent to near mint shape is retained, something I could rarely ever state on this one.

Cover Summary: Classic artwork and concept, but longevity maybe was not considered when designed. It does take an exceptional amount of care to keep one looking excellent let alone better. The front and back in particular often rub badly and the shaped flaps rarely get seen undamaged, ironically this often happens when inserting into a protective cover – the utmost care is required. The lack of ringwear is a massive bonus on the back and Stacia looks magnificent on all her natural glory. A few small blemishes, yes, but realistically how many will ever be ‘perfect’? All factors taken into consideration, this may be one of the best examples you will be offered for some time and it should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: MINT(-): this came with the biscuit-colour UA unlined inner sleeve and this in superb condition. Barely aged at all being ultra clean and free of toning or marks. All edges unsplit with no repairs and hardly a crease to be seen. Truly exceptional in all aspects.

The Book (The Hawkwind Log): MINT(-), with no paper or page-wear and incredible, both the original staples are untarnished or loose. In fact they both look as made and as solid as when made. Printed on very thin paper, not too dissimilar to newsprint but better. A pivitol part of this album, many are offered with it missing and later copies did not even include it. Still very secure with both original staples firmly in place with no pulling or stressing. The lack of wear, noteworthy creasing and crispness reitterate just how fine this fragile book is. All 24 pages are superb with no tearing or ageing, even the cover pages are the same and I doubt if this has hardly even handled or seen light-of-day for decades.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT, and this hardly does this super copy full justice, without doubt very little played but a tiny mark at the very start that seems all too common on this album for the reasons mentioned further up. A lovely fresh visual copy, one seldom, if ever seen without the odd minor blemish or two and rarely purchased by hi-fi connoisseurs. This is very clean, with super shine, intense black and fairly solidly pressed. Simply compare this record (and cover and contents) to most seen or found, many being in shocking conditions that are not worthy of a second glance or listen. This will prove difficult to find much better for looks and sound.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This early Hawkwind record mostly plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. The tiny mark at the start has a few brief light ticks but they disappear fast as the music really starts. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a clean recording, a slightly muted production that needs more volume to be enjoyed at its best, most Hawkwind fans will know this of course. Simply crank up the volume and then it comes to life with a vengeance. Any surface sounds are minimal, gentle and faint – this is an album with some quiet passages so total silence is a huge ask bordering on unrealistic. The odd further sporadic one-off click here and there will be near impossible to avoid. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this has been played very lightly and has, generally been well stored and looked after within a non-smoking environment. The odd mishap near the beginning is all to common on this record due to the near silence of the opening. Thereafter little, if anything spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this acid-rock classic. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and merits strong recommendation. Not quite for the perfectionist, but this overall copy sets a high standard.

End Piece: An album that shows up sometimes, but rarely in these fine, and complete conditions. My experience of this title is more for poor, damaged covers and heavily played, often heavily scratched records with the inner and certainly log book missing (or in tatters). This better-pressed copy bucks the trend and retains fine quality in all departments, the cover, inner and book are exceptional. Although not the most technically gifted or critics favourite band of all time, they did what they did brilliantly and pleased their loyal fans. Hawkwind’s early albums were perfect for those days of rock experimentalism and excess, and live they were always exciting – this is a studio album by the way. Classic acid space-rock and fans of this band and genre will love it, a highly recommended complete copy that takes you into the next dimension. Hawkwind were the masters of the universe.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
