Rarity: Moderately scarce, it sold fairly well in the UK acually peaking at No 9, but predictably, a relative failure in the United States only just breaking in at 179. Never easy to find with a decent cover, a 36 x 24 inch poster style sleeve with two delicate colourful inner sleeves. So many seen heavily creased, torn and badly rubbed, the inners split and creased. Ring wear seldom avoided on these parts as well. These type of albums were rarely bought by hi-fi buffs and so often treated badly. This a very fine all-round copy, the cover with far less wear than usual, both inners superb and fully intact, the records both play very well. Overall, it should please many collectors and all elements of the set are somewhat above average.

Brief Info: One of my favourite live rock albums – Hawkwind rarely sounded better than on this live acid-rock space-trip. All the early classics are included and with singer Bob Calvert on board, it gave them a new dimension. A stoned-out double set recorded in Liverpool and London – this is largely regarded as Hawkwind’s best ever album and the cover is regularly voted highly as one of the best as well. A shame it was not more sturdy, these large format poster-style covers rarely wear well. Featuring Lemmy on his grinding bass – play this album loud for full effect, this is the ultimate space trip. Turner’s electrically treated reeds and splintering guitar from Brock with King’s pulsating rhythm, no-one this side of the cosmos sounded like them. It must have been amazing to have been there, unfortunately I missed out, but saw them several times starting in 1976 after their famous dancer and Lemmy had left. Visually they were stunning live, mind-bending light shows, volume and at this time, the famous Stacia danced to the pulsating rhythms, often as nature intended, she was a formidable lady and Hawk fans adored her. She joined the band in 1971 and stayed until 1975, a six feet tall lady apparently with a 52 inch chest, she was an integral part of the band’s stage shows in this, their classic period. She wore few clothes, often appearing with none and was decorated in luminous paint and swayed and writhed to the loud electric mayhem. Such a shame there appears no video footage of these live shows from this classic period. Spectacularly packaged in a huge poster cover and including two colourful inners, these are more often seen in very poor conditions and few survive naturally intact. The cover here has less wear than most, and those two inners are in superb conditions with no tears or splits. A cover often wall-mounted and then damaged, this puts a very fine example like this in real context. Both records play impressively with little unwanted, and that is far from guaranteed as pressing quality often was variable – being issued in 1972, the reason obvious. Often purchased by certain fans, rarely hi-fi buffs and played into the ground while enjoying recreational delights. Not perfect, few will ever survive that will be, but a very solid and enjoyable copy that many will cherish.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: and arguably better. Single albums with these poster covers are bad enough, but TWO, makes longevity perilous and difficult. It simply is not robust enough for the contents. A large poster-style cover made with thin, single thickness card that opens to around 3 x 2 feet (36 x 24 inches). Unlaminated, matt finished and printed and made in England. This original includes the scarce original manufacturers price sticker and both inner sleeves.

Cover Appearance: Firstly, the front, seen as folded. It has minimal rubbing or creasing and no sticker issues. The original £3-10 price sticker is little short of perfect and seldom seen as such. These only on the very early copies, many were removed with disastrous results, this has never been tampered with or picked at. Very strong colour retained, the fantastic graphic looks superb as-seen. Always worthy of note, this one has been very neatly folded in manufacture, I have seen some very out-of-square which ruins the whole effect. The back cover is very similar, it has a little edge rubbing and odd small tip crease. The lack of ring wear is great news as this seldom avoids it.

The inside colour faces are impressive with little wear, a little rubbing to the spine corners but not much else. All six inside grey-tone faces are superb with hardly anything to fault – the small black squares are not really there, I edited these on my photograph to cover the sensitive areas. All edges have a little thickening and the closed ones some patchy rubbing, all folds very strong and unweakened and unsplit. The spine is still fairly upright, certainly not crushed or totally flattened like most. Unusually, a high percentage of the text is retained, a little patchy rubbing to the y,ntral area, but still legible. Again, any spines on this are threadbare and totally eroded, so this has fared quite well also. Lastly, the cover lays very flat, flush and parallel which I consider important. All surfaces are seen in my pictures, so make your own mind up, personally, I think this is quite an impressive example of a very unforgiving poster cover.

The Inner Sleeves: EXCELLENT(++): the best pair I have seen for ages. These were never lined and both look fantastic being ultra clean, fresh and vibrant with all edges intact with no repairs. These are a matching pair with the rarer external flipback construction. Both have the angled shapes corners and deep recessed top openings. Not all these were made the same, some had rounded corners with no flipbacks. Any creasing minimal and both have escaped ring wear, any burring to the entance edge card minimal, there are no tears or damage. Never under-estimate how difficult it is find these bright inner sleeves like this – often they are missing altogether.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: (or thereabouts), a fine visual pair that are clean with fine shine and very solidly pressed. A pair appearing modestly played with only very fine, wispy type surface marks or hairlines as mostly seen under bright light. There are no penetrating stylus scratches and these very fine superficial marks register little at all in average room light. Certainly not abused or mistreated like many that did not survive those heady times, all four sides play impressively and clean, even the quieter spoken passages, the odd sporadic tick or surface trace near impossible to avoid totally. This pair should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This double live set will take you into the next dimension – both records play above their very fine visual grading with very little to fault. Rarely purchased by the more discerning high-fidelity sound purists, but fans of a certain type, and few survive this clean. Well recorded, if a little raw to give that full-on and exciting sound that is perfect for their brand of music. The louder songs powerfully driven by Lemmy’s grinding bass that is high in the mix. These record offer strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is high with a solid dynamic range and detailed sound with no tracking issues*. Any surface sounds are minimal – I have mentioned the odd sporadic tick or surface traces will rarely ever be avoided, that is simply being realistic, especially with very quiet introductions. Any surface sounds are gentle and very infrequent. Just enough to politely remind you are listening to a 44-year-old record, but overall, this is a very fine clean pressing and clearly, modestly played. Typical of this classic era Hawkwind, most is loud anyway. Few available copies will outperform this quality, very early all ‘1’ stamper pressing significantly I feel sure. Hardly anything at all spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these lovely records. They could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended unless total perfection is mandatory – and good luck with that for this quite challenging double album.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
