Weight of this Record: 130 grams. A little above average for it’s era.

Rarity: Scarce: and the early pressed copies with the open out shield cover and inner are harder to find especially in really top conditions. Not only that, this copy plays with superb sound and includes a very clean and unsplit inner sleeve. An album I have offered a few times before, but few have been this good. Slightly later pressings saw the cover revert to a standard single format – also, this is very difficult to locate on CD. One last detail, and arguably the most important, this copy is the wide cut version that offers vastly superior sound to the more narrow cut later ones. What this means is, the grooves occupy more space of the playing area ending nearer the label rim. Wider grooves always means wider and fuller dynamic range and detail. This is immediately apparent if both are put ‘side-by-side’ and compared for looks and sound. From the very beginning, the details of the cymbals on ‘Assault and Battery’ are sharper, crisper and really fizz compared to the more compact groove version. Many may not even know there were two distinct cuts of this record, but it IS a fact – I have had both and this example is more for the audiophile listener – there really is a significant different the sound quality. These details are cut from the matrixes and details seen a little further down.

Brief Info: For many Hawk fans, the best studio album they ever made – the last to include Lemmy. Now included is High Tide’s Simon House which added more depth to their sound. Every song is brilliant and I rate side one as one of the best acid-rock moments ever - side two is not far short either. This early pressed copy includes the original format open out shield cover, a difficult sleeve that has minimal traces of wear and way less than most seen – in fact this is a beauty. The inner is in excellent condition also, that equally difficult as most splilt or ring wear. The record plays with fantastic sound as it should and without doubt, this has been played little. A wide cut early example for maximum detail and dynanic range, this sounds fantastic. For those who bought this album around issue time, most played it heavily – this really is a classic album and regardless of if you are a fan or not – few will not enjoy ‘Warrior’. A great copy to listen too and the earliest pressings with the original ‘shield’ cover in this condition are now getting more and more elusive. If I did not already own a magnificent copy myself, this would be going nowhere.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High: Very delicate and wear-prone, the fold-out flaps to make the shield are often seen badly creased, often split or torn. Also this cover was often wall-mounted (like a poster), so tape marks and pin-holes are far from uncommon.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a very impressive example of this unforgiving cover. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt smooth surfaces. This has the open-out shaped shield, the pictures should help make this clear. Made in England and including the graphic inner sleeve.

Cover Front & Back: As seen fully opened. Superb and with amongst the least wear I have seen on the gorgeous designed cover. Minimal traces of any rubbing or grubbiness with barely a crease to be seen. Even the spine folds are unrubbed and solid. The only blemish, entirely within manufacture, are a couple of small raised surface bumps near the base of the spine. I would imagine occuring during the folding procedure when made, these are small and minor anyway and have nothing to do with wear. Very slight traces of set-off and a gentle rim impression near the top of the back, but little else. It will take an amazing example to better this classic shield cover significantly.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Both shield side and inner flap are close to immaculate and practically as made. All the shaped areas crisp, precise and sharp with no burring or thickening. This cover is unmounted e.g. no pin holes or tape marks and retains rich, intense colour. A real delight to see this cover looking so strong.

Top Edges: These are quite thick and show barely any traces of wear, both straight and exceptional and even lying flat and flush when closed.

Bottom Edges: Four thick edges that show barely any hint of wear at all – totally remarkable. These storage edges have survived superbly and few will ever show less wear than these. The folds for the shield flap are very strong and totally unweakened or stressed with nigh-on total ink coverage and no exposed card seen. This has to be a first for me on these particularly vulnerable edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mainly very sharp with minimal traces of wear. The odd tiny burr, nick or thickening trace on the back viewed end-on. I have seldom seen this cover so well preserved and the lack of wear on these two open edges simply reitterates just how little the record has made the trip out. Both are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: The two small raised bumps near the bottom corner aparat, this is little short or pristine. As stated, two small raised bumps almost certainly created when the fold hinges were made in manufacture. Very solid, robust and thick, also very straight with barely any compression and folded beautifully square. No text was printed on this one and try finding one with less wear (and NO enhancements), even all the folds retain close to full ink retention, the two small aforementioned blemishes the only factor for the purist.

Corners: Any tip rubbing is minuscule. Excellent to near mint shape retained. A quite extraordinary achievement on such a design and format.

Cover Summary: A very impressive example of this very fragile and wear-prone mid-70’s cover, one that will prove very challenging to find significantly better. One of rock’s greatest covers and a classic and difficult one to fine like this. This should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): with all edges unsplit or torn and that is highly unusual, there are NO repairs. Clean and uncreased with very deep colour, this is unlined and printed both sides, it has the full width top opening. Many suffer ringwear but this has only light rim impression with any whitening near minuscule. One small and light crease to one top corner and the top opening edges crisp and neat. These are also seldom seen a great deal better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: a very fine visual copy that is very clean with nice shine, intense black and very solidly pressed. A small few mainly light surface marks, most seen under bright angled light, and these totally superficial with no effect on the magnificent sound, side two has very few at all. I am sure very modestly played and visually an impressive record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This Hawkwind classic plays even above its high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and detailed sound. Again, this is the wider-cut version with full band width on the songs that make a considerable difference to the dynamic range and details. Some fans may know this, but I would wager many do not. This was bought to my attention a couple of years ago by a connoisseur fan and comparing the wide and narrower cut versions side-by-side is considerable. The detail, volume and sonic delivery of the sound on the wider cut grooves is immense and this is for the discerning collector and audiophile listener is crucial. A few months ago, I had the chance to compare direct, and this version (with the matrixes and details as per above) won by a considerable distance. Any surface sounds barely registered and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Any minor surface blemishes non-sounding and even the spoken passages are quiet and clean, that never to be taken for granted to say the least. Few copies will match let alone outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this Hawkwind classic that includes arguably their best-ever line-up and studio material. This copy could prove very difficult to find better and merits my highest possible recommendation. Not all UA albums were pressed to this standard, and I enjoyed this copy immensely – a real prog-rock favourite – do not lose it.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
