Label/Format: United Artists – matt smooth surfaces.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only one or two ultra light, super-fine and faint spindle marks. As can be seen on side A, there is a reference sticker, apparently this was a stock radio DJ copy and had probably only been played once prior to my mandatory play-grade. The cover also had the same stick which, with immense care I slowly removed (nervously). But it actually proved very easy and it came off without any real problem in one piece and barely even leaving any trace on the cover front. I am almost certain this label sticker would also remove just as easily, but I felt it possibly more likely it would leave a circle residue or stain as label ink is different and unpredictable. So putting it simply, I decided to let it be as I personally feel it does not detract to any real degree. Simply part of the album’s history and does no harm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 110 grams. A little below average for this album, however this IS a first issue with the wider band track width grooves that truly DO offer superior sound to the slightly later ones where the grooves and playing area are more compressed as is the sound and detail. The later pressings have higher matrix numbers and do not offer the detail and dynamic range of the earlier ones.

Rarity: Scarce: and the early pressed copies with the open out shield cover and inner are harder to find especially in really top conditions. Not only that, this copy plays with lovely clean sound and includes a very clean and unsplit inner sleeve. Later pressings saw the cover revert to a standard single format – also, this is very difficult to locate on CD. One last detail, and arguably the most important, this copy is the wide cut version that offers vastly superior sound to the more narrow cut later ones. What this means is, the grooves occupy more space of the playing area ending nearer the label rim. Wider grooves always means wider and fuller dynamic range and detail. This is immediately apparent if both are put ‘side-by-side’ and compared for looks and sound. From the very beginning, the details of the cymbals on ‘Assault and Battery’ are sharper, crisper and really fizz compared to the more compact groove version. Many may not even know there were two distinct cuts of this record, but it IS a fact – I have had both and this example is more for the audiophile listener – there really is a significant different the sound quality. These details are cut from the matrixes and details seen a little further down.

Brief Info: For many Hawkwind fans, the best studio album they ever made – the last to include Lemmy. The inclusion of Simon House formerly of High Tide, added more depth to their sound. Every song is brilliant and I rate side one as one of the best acid-rock moments ever - side two is not far short either. This early pressed copy includes the original format open out shield cover, a difficult sleeve that has minimal traces of wear and way less than most seen. The inner is in excellent condition also, that equally difficult as most split or form ringwear. The record plays with impressive clean sound as it should and without doubt, this has been played little. A ‘wide cut’ early example for maximum detail and dynanic range, this sounds fantastic. For those who bought this album around issue time, most played it heavily – this really is a classic album and regardless of if you are a fan or not – few will not enjoy ‘Warrior’. A great copy to listen too and the earliest pressings with the original ‘shield’ cover in this condition are now getting more and more elusive. If I did not already own a magnificent copy myself, this would be going nowhere.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a very impressive example of this unforgiving and highly damage-prone cover. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt smooth surfaces. This has the open-out shaped shield, the pictures should help make this clear. Made in England and including the graphic inner sleeve.

Cover Cosmetic Improvements: None Apparent, but the same style sticker as seen on the label was carefully, and very successfully removed from the front.

Cover Front & Back: As seen fully opened. Superb and with amongst the least wear I have seen on the gorgeous designed cover. Minimal traces of any rubbing or grubbiness with hardly any creases at all. Even the spine folds are unrubbed and solid with full ink retention. One tiny chip on the front a little below the ‘a’ in the large pink ‘Hawkwind’ and a tiny nick on the back top left edge. The bottom shaped opening flaps are little short of pristine with razor-sharp edges with no splits, thickening or burring.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The fully opened shield is simply magnificent and practically mint as made, little else to really add – let the pictures do the talking.

Top Edges: A small central rub on the back with a slight ‘thin’, this appears to be a movement mark or rub but only light as seen viewed end-on, this not seen from front or back viewing. The thin only really seen when the inside of the cover is held to light. That apart, little else to fault on either edge which are both very straight and meet up together flush and parallel, this never guaranteed on this more complex cover that needs to be folded very square for maximum visual pleasure – and this one really is.

Bottom Edges: These hinge storage edges are clearly highly prone to wear, but amazingly, they have barely any. Any rub traces are very fine and faint and finding these crucial areas better will prove very difficult.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mainly sharp with minimal traces of wear. Any thickening or burring small and light as seen viewed end-on, I have already mentioned a small nick on the back. Both edges are open, here correctly so with no adhesive in the front, both are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Superb and looking practically as made. Very solid, robust and very straight with barely any hint of compression and folded beautifully square. No text was printed on this one and try finding one with less wear (and NO enhancements), even all the folds retain full ink retention with no scuffs. Incredibly hard to find like this.

Corners: A little tip rubbing to the top right pair but little else. Very fine to better than excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very impressive example of this very fragile and wear-prone mid-1970’s cover, one that will prove very challenging to find significantly better. One of rock’s greatest covers and a classic and difficult one to find like this. An elaborate piece of rock art and only available for a fairly limited time before reverted to a more basic standard cover with the lovely shield graphic gone.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: with all edges unsplit or torn and that is highly unusual, there are NO repairs. Clean with just a crease on one corner (bottom right) with very deep colour, this is unlined and printed both sides, it has the full width top opening. Many suffer ringwear but this has avoided it. The top opening edges crisp and neat, again guaranteed with no enhancements. These are also seldom seen a great deal better, the crease stopping a top Mint(–) grading.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): and this being probably very harsh. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with impressive shine and fairly solidly pressed. Not the heaviest pressing ever, but a top pressing with quality, clean sound. Any surface marks few and mostly very fine and light as seen more critically under bright angled light, and these totally superficial with no effect on the magnificent sound. I am certain, this has hardly been played and visually an impressive record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This Hawkwind classic plays even above its high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and detailed sound. Again I emphasise, this is the wider-cut version with full band width on the songs that make a considerable difference to the dynamic range and details. Some collectors may know this, but I would wager many do not. This was bought to my attention a couple of years ago by a connoisseur Hawkwind fan and comparing the wide and narrower cut versions side-by-side is considerable. The detail, volume and sonic delivery of the sound on the wider cut grooves is immense and this is for the discerning collector and audiophile listener is crucial. So time ago, I had the chance to compare both versions having both to hand, the difference is quite considerable. This copy has minimal surface sound and is an exceptional clean pressing, the odd trace on the very challenging spoken-word passages is near impossible to avoid totally. Few copies will match let alone outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this Hawkwind classic that includes arguably their best-ever line-up and studio material. It will prove difficult to find much better and merits strong recommendation. Not all UA albums were pressed to this standard, and I enjoyed this copy immensely – a real prog-rock favourite – do not lose it.

Now one of the most established sellers on Ebay and still offering the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
