In 1981, Deutsche Grammophone released their third Bruckner cycle on LP. The release (2740 253) featured Daniel Barenboim conducting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. This was the first Bruckner cycle featuring an American orchestra and the first cycle by Deutsche Grammophon to include the early Symphony in D Minor. However, from its initial LP and then CD release in the 1980’s until 2009, the Barenboim/Chicago Symphony Bruckner cycle - not to be confused with Barenboim’s later cycle (1-9) on Teldec with the Berlin Philharmonic – was out-of-print and gradually becoming a very rare collector’s item. Sets were selling on Ebay for several hundred dollars and even higher in Japan. Interesting - but what about the recordings themselves? In short, Daniel Barenboim's set is a major contribution to the Bruckner symphonic canon. I am particularly fond of his recording of the Eighth, which DG recorded with the nascent digital technology at the time (1980 or 1981). Barenboim tries to introduce the sense of mystery that Furtwangler had in his performances. The CSO strings and brass really soar. The French horn solo playing of retired CSO first horn Dale Clevenger is just as good as his counterpart in Berlin. Although in some of the symphonies my preference is still for Herbert von Karajan's intense Berlin readings, Barenboim's CSO set - much preferable to the one he made later on CD with the Berlin Philharmonic - has much to commend it.

Album jackets graded EX/NM- and above will be stiff and sturdy without seam splits and excessive wear at the edges. Those graded VG+ and lower may have tape, and varying degrees of wear such as ring wear, seam splits, edge wear, and so forth.
