Grayson & Whitter VICTOR V-40235 ON THE BANKS OF THE TENNESSEE / TOM DOOLEY
Historic Murder Ballad Recorded Sept 30 1929 in Memphis Tennessee This historic 78 only sold about 4,000 copies for Victor Record Company. The Kingston Trio's 1958 version became a major commercial hit, selling 6,000,000 copies, playing a great role in the Folk Music revial and even more specifically, in the renewed interest in old appalaichan mountain tunes.
Both sides are glossy with some light visible wear, slightly more on Tom Dooley side but it doesn't wreck the listenability at all. A little peak distoriton on that side but the music is prominent and loud above background on both sides. I'd say it's a solid V+ listen.
Overall, a listenable copy of one that doesn't turn up often!
