·       NOTE: AT LEAST THREE (POSSIBLY MORE) VARIATIONS OF STRATA-EAST LABEL EXIST FOR THIS TITLE: SO FAR, WE HAVE ENCOUNTERED THREE VERSIONS: BLACK WITH WHITE PRINT (WHITE TOP/BLACK BOTTOM), ALL-WHITE WITH BLACK PRINT AND THIS, PALE-BLUE LABEL WITH BLACK PRINT (WE WERE TOLD THAT GREEN LABEL ALSO EXISTS, ALTHOUGH WE HAVE NEVER SEEN ONE);. IT APPEARS THAT, MORE OR LESS, ALL THREE (OR FOUR?) LABEL VARIATIONS WERE IN PRINT CONCURRENTLY (AT THE SAME TIME) AND THAT ALL THREE VARIANTS ARE EQUALLY VALID FIRST PRESSINGS. THE LABEL WE HAVE HERE IS PALE BLUE VERSION WITH BLACK PRINT.

I don't have many Strata East titles, partially because a lot of them are fairly hard to come by, but mainly because most of the label's output was spiritual jazz which I'm not a huge fan of. However, there are plenty of solid Strata pieces, many of which are quite funky and have been sampled in the past. The Heath Brothers is no exception, making plenty of collectors' want lists and wall of fames, almost exclusively for the "Smiling Billy Suite" which sprawls itself over four tracks on the entire B-side. The bass line is where it's at, and it shouldn't take long for most hip-hop heads to figure out that it was sampled on Nas' "One Love."

The Heath Brothers were comprised of Jimmy Heath (b. James Edward Heath, 25 October 1926, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; composer, arranger, tenor and soprano saxophones, flute), Percy Heath (b. 30 April 1923, Wilmington, North Carolina, USA, Southampton, New York, USA; bass) and Al "Tootie" Heath (b. Albert Heath, 31 May 1935, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; drums). Each had distinguished careers in jazz during the 50's, as the brothers collaborated with each other in various forms up until 1974 when Percy's regular band broke up, and the brothers decided to grab pianist Stanley Cowell and release their first album, Marchin' On. They proceeded to release three more albums with Columbia and two with Antilles.

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs - are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible, and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

We could not "feel" these abrasions with our fingertip, and we suspect that they are NOT audible.

(b)            The record is pressed on a RELATIVELY thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type), vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD+++.

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Some visible shelf wear noted on the seams

-         Cover has one corner slightly worn / frayed / bent (just a beginning of the split seam)

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2 (front side) and 4 (back side)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record), probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No yellowing from aging

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No razor marks, scratches, pressure marks, lines, streaks, or cuts.

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover
