NEW HOPE JAZZ MASS (double Lp) by HEIKKI SARMANTO ENSEMBLE with GREGG SMITH VOCAL QUARTET and the LONG ISLAND SYMPHONIC CHORAL ASSOCIATION. Original Finland 1st pressing on the FINLANDIA RECORDS label (FA 201 LP2), from 1979. Majestic sounding, Finnish jazz masterpiece with deep spiritual rhythms / modal and free jazz influences. Sophisticated music, led by cult pianist and composer, Heikki Sarmanto with mesmerising vocal chorus. This is the session featuring the killer DUKE AND TRANE theme that was comped on Spiritual Jazz Vol 2 by the Jazzman label. A fabulous example of the genre with ancient Arabic / middle-eastern touches too. Possibly even better, is the uncomped NORTHERN LIGHTS and we have also recorded GLORY TO GOD IN THE HIGHEST (with lots more amazing soul-searching solos). Big record for euro / Nordic / Xian jazz lovers and DJs. Shades of the Palle Mikkelborg & Radiojazzgruppen - The Mysterious Corona in places and a record that should also appeal to fans of Strata East / Farrell Pharoah Sanders / Detroit Tribe collective / John and Alice Coltrane et al. The New Hope Jazz Mass recording was the result of a commission from St. Peter's Church, New York to celebrate the opening of the church's new site in midtown, Manhattan. The music received its American premiere in New York in 1978 but the original vinyl recording was only released in Finland in 1979. A film of the entire work was made in Helsinki for telecast to Finland and other European countries at the time. Striking artwork sleeve with lots of information on the musicians and content. Vinyl is closer to shiny M- condition overall with a few hairlines and faint pressing marks. Light surface noises. Some soft pops / soft ticks in places (as you can hear on the soundclip) but item most probably unplayed prior to the recording of our soundclip. Very shallow / slightest storage warp to the 2nd disc (side 3 and 4) that does not affect play. The soft card, gatefold sleeve is strong VG+ condition overall with general wear from storage. Some ripples to card. Corner wear / creasing (inside gatefold spine area) and some wear to down the edge of the right hand, open side. Small, old price sticker to front sleeve. Camera flash glare to sleeve and label photo. Rare double Lp!!!
