Considered by many to be one of, if not THE definitive math-rock album, the debut full-length from Sacramento duo Hella combined guitar mangling with free flowing drums and percussion, cultivating in a sonic concoction that bastardised jazz, depraved prog-rock and hyper-increased the velocity of punk. Originally released in 2002 through 5 Rue Christine, a sub-label of Kill Rock Stars, the two decades since would see the pair drafted into the now pioneering alumni of creative label/entity/movement Sargent House, though Hold Your Horse Is continues to be elevated to an incomparable standard. Nowadays, with the band also being noted for drummer Zach Hill's later project, the alt-punk-hip-hop mob Death Grips, a retroactive light has shone on the enigmatic musician's musical past lives, making this long overdue reissue rife for a place on many an old and new collector's shelf alike.
