1st ISSUE 'PUPPET SLEEVE' IN AWESOME TOP CONDITION! RARELY EVER SEEN LIKE THIS!

Another from my personal collection, due to a few requests for me to list some Hendrix records on ebay, I have sorted some of the early UK originals which I will be featureing in the next few days so please keep watching my site! Amaizingly this is the first time that I have ever listed A Band Of Gypsies on ebay. These are rarely seen with decent original covers for sale and this copy is in extraordinary condition for over 40 years old. Often seen badly worn and frail, This cover has always been seperated from the vinyl and in a case for over 40 years, which has helped preserve this cover from the nasty ringware that is so often seen on these. The audio is awesome cristal clear and very vibrant throughout!

Band of Gypsys is a psychadelic rock band led by Jimi Hendrix and backed by Billy Cox and Buddy Miles. Hendrix formed the band after the dissolution of The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Band of Gypsys is also the band's eponymous live album recorded on two separate nights, 31 December 1969 and 1 January 1970, at the Fillmore East. Released just three months before his death in 1970, it was the last album Hendrix himself authorized, and the only Hendrix-authorized album to be released on Capitol Records (in the U.S.), and Track Record labels here in the UK! This was the result of a settlement regarding a recording contract he had signed in 1965!.

After Hendrix disbanded the Jimi Hendrix Experience in mid-1969, he formed Gypsy Sun and Rainbows to fulfill the contract for the Experience to play Woodstock.  Bassist Billy Cox (who had played with Hendrix while they were in the army) had been rehearsing and playing with Hendrix since April, but the band was short-lived!!.

With Cox and his drummer friend Buddy Miles, Hendrix next formed the Band of Gypsys, this time to fulfill his obligation to produce an LP of new material for Ed Chalpin, to be released on the Capitol label. Hendrix, in interviews as early as March 1969, had already mentioned a "jam" album to be titled Band of Gypsys. Hendrix also mentioned in his introduction at Woodstock that "Band of Gypsys" was an alternative name for the group performing there!!.

They recorded a single "Stepping Stone" (backed with b/w "Izabella") for Reprise, which was quickly withdrawn after its release. They also recorded some studio material, and several finished tracks, some of which have been released on First Rays of the New Rising Sun and elsewhere. They made their live debut at the Fillmore East on New Year's Eve, 1969, for a series of four shows spread over two nights!.

The Fillmore East concerts featured mostly new songs, as the songs for the Band of Gypsys LP would have to be original due to a recent judgment against him in a contractual suit. This performance was captured using the then new portable Sony Portapak B&W video camera and open-reel 1/2" videotape recorder, from two different angles!!.

The set of concerts is notable for being the only known time in which Hendrix used an Octavia pedal, though its effects were recorded on many of his studio songs, including "Purple Haze". Custom made for him, Hendrix rarely brought the Octavia to shows for fear it might get stolen!

In some markets, including this album featured 1st issue UK press, the album was released with a cover photograph that featured dolls of Hendrix, Brian Jones, Bob Dylan and British DJ John Peel, an early supporter of Hendrix!!.

Hendrix selected two Buddy Miles songs and three of his own for the album, not wanting to give away any more of his new songs than he had to"We Gotta Live Together" is heavily edited to fit on the album. Its original length is about twice that which can be heard on the album. A longer version can be heard on Live at the Fillmore East album; the full version has never been officially released!!.

Due to the demands of four sets over two days, the band needed a lot of material and played the Experience-era favorites "Wild Thing," "Hey Joe," "Purple Haze, "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)," "Foxy Lady," "Fire," and "Stone Free" to fill out the sets. Nearing the end of the fourth set, Hendrix said, "We're just trying to figure out something to play, but we only know about six songs right now...seven...nine." He then launched into a version of "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)." "Foxy Lady" was included on the later Japanese/German re-release Furthermore, "Wild Thing," "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" and "Stone Free" can be heard on Live at the Fillmore East!!.

The Vinyl

The first thing to note is that the vinyl is the original thick and chunky slab of vinyl (only found on the earliest pressings) later press are much more flimsy and less robust. The vinyl lays perfectly flat on the turntable! On initial inspection it is quite obvious that this vinyl has barely been played and the vinyl retains its original sheen from new! Only in strong light I can just see sleeve removal type grazes and the odd light scuff mark, I cant see any needle scratches or indeed any thing that would cause any loud clicks or pops!!

The Audio quality

I have played this vinyl track for track four times prior to listing on a top system at very loud volume!! The first thing to note is that from the moment the needle hits the playing surface it was quite evedent to me that this vinyl has barely ever been played at all! The audio was unbelevably clear and vibrant throughout, stunning bassey feel on this vinyl. There was (no) loud clicks or pops and certainly (no) distortion or any signs that this vinyl has been over played at all. Very minor static was heard in some quiet places only and perhaps the very very light ticks in the odd isolated place but certainly not consistant throughout the audio which could have possibly been attributed to dirt and dust in the grooves from laying dormant for over 40 years! Please note, I have noticed  that possibly, if played on some systems any static would not be heard at all because my system is extreemely sensitive.I must emphisise that there was no loud clicks or pops and this was extreemely clear and vibrant! I rate the audio as stunning throughout!! I would grade the audio at least excellent plus for the most part!

Please note! I always make this disclaimer! That although I never heard any clicks or pops during the play of this record please allow for the odd static tick here and there certainly (not )consistant throughout the audio, please remember  that this is a genuine 37 year old vinyl that would have been played on a 37 year old system!!!!

Points to note, this album has been stored in a case laying dormant for over 40 years, a build up of dirt and dust in the grooves from laying dormant causes static!  A constant clean before each play is highly recomended, this will reduce any static and will enhance the audio

The Labels

These are the 1st issue Track labels in stunning condition! Amaizingly I can only barely see a handful of spider marks only , indicatting that this vinyl has barely ever been played at all in my opinion!

The Cover

This is the 1st issue known as the 'Puppet sleeve'   printed by Macneil Press. Very rarely ever seen in this awesome tip top condition! Without the normal storageware and rubbing so often seen on these originals and no splits or tares! Amaizingly any creases can only really be noticed if angled to the light and are very minor indeed!! Thjis is strong and straight and doesnot suffer from ringware (so rare to find) This must grade at least excellent plus in my opinion!!!
